I just ran into someone in TO who said she was in Ottawa the day I did my monkeys and apparantly, after I left, a pan handler sat his hat down in front of my work and collected on it.
It wouldn't bother me if I wasn't sure that he probably made more on it than I did.
Well, maybe I WILL just keep telling myself that.

          Chalk the Walk and Massey

Went Massey street painting Festival, then straight to Chalk the Walk. Won 2nd choice at Massey (Davo is the happy winner there, and sends his big warm regards to Chalk Circle), won people's Choice in Sydney Chalk the Walk.

Seems I have a stupid bloody computer virus AGAIN!!!!!!!(Being twice in three months with two differnt anti-virus progs).. So temporarily can't put up a direct pictures here til my confuser whizz returns from Bali...(Maybe I will become a mac user....if I ever save enough money!)

But I did write a little road story / picture report on my web of Massey-Sydney last week..

and a little slideshow from Sydney Morning Herald (Chalk the Walk) links from my front page.

          Happy Birthday Peter

              melbourne spring

Melbourne Cup is usually a ridiculously important international horse race held in november, a public holiday for everyone except jewish schools.
This year it turned into a rather local race because of a horse flu epidemic which started in NSW and caused a lot of horses from everywhere else to be excluded. This has never happened before that i know of. Many international and interstate visitors still came to the cup.
This drawing that Diana and I did at southbank was a tribute to this years spring racing carnival ,the winner in the middle a horse
originally bred in NZ and named Efficient came from the back somewhere and much to a lot of locals surprise thundered home leaving most of the field in the distance.
It was not a favourite so people who were lucky enough to have picked it like my next door neighbour made a decent amount of dough on the bet.
This year the weather for the cup was perfect and it must have been the first cup in 3 years when it wasn't raining or blowing a gale.
Our best day was the day after the cup when there were still tourists about but i have to say that there is a malaise in melbourne about street entertainment which is a bit of a rude shock to us and other buskers here. it can be bad on one or two days at this time of the year but people seem so removed from whats going on and so generally disinterested we wonder on some days why we try.
it may be the federal election next weekend that has bored everybody to death with campaigning and advertising drawn out over months now or maybe its the fact that interest rates are rocketing up again. The atmosphere on our streets is not pretty or reliable if anyone is thinking of coming to Southbank at this point in time to busk. Hope it improves.

Francois Pelletier turned up in Melb. this week. He and Bev met yesterday and had quite a few laughs. Bev won't be around much over the next few weeks and I doubt that Ulla wants to go busking much right now so I hope he has a good time.

Bev and I are finally escaping Melbourne. We have bought an old Station-Master's house on a 2.5 acre property that was a railway station until about 60yrs ago. About 300km west of Melbourne on the edge of the desert, it has established gardens, a railway carriage sleep-out, giant shed and the closest neighbour is the 76,000 hectare Stawell State Park next door. 8km south is the northern-most tip of the spectacular Grampians National Park. Our nearest human neighbours are Helga, an unrepatriated German hippie who plays euphonium in the local band, and Gary, an equally unrepentant hippie environmental scientist/teacher.

It's about 9km out of a small town called Stawell, directly between Melbourne and Adelaide. We also bought the local art supply and picture framing shop in the main street because it seems a good idea. If any-one is travelling between Adelaide and Melb. we won't be hard to find and can show you a bit of the other side of this country.

The move is seriously daunting, we have been here for 20yrs, 16 boxes of books and the shelves are still half full, I have already moved about 60 framed paintings, drawings, prints etc, and have about 25 more from 6ft x 4ft to small stuff. We have map-drawers with hundreds of works on paper, unfortunately the drawers are built in so we have to move them without the benefit of the cabinet. Only about half of this art is by us.

Lawyers, agents (R.E. and Ins.), banks, accountants, conveyencers, tax, the electricity and telecom type companies are all making a contribution to our load.

Maybe I should put this in "Rant Here".

Anyway, exciting times, which is of course an ancient Chinese curse.

I've never done a piece in public that I had to spend more than one day on (one long day). I shall be doing so however, for festivals this year. Do you leave your pieces out in the open, as is, or do you cover them for the night? ...How should I do this?
I've seen Francois tape down cardboard over his work for the night to prevent steppage.
Well, maybe I WILL just keep telling myself that.

Normally, Rachel, we just rely on fixatives to protect the work.

                          Big on Bloor

I don't yet have photos of the finished piece, but this one means more to me...

I LOVE how inclusive my style seems to be, with children.
I'd like to set up a "kid's corner" for my next outing. I had several "can I help you?" request. (And hey, if the kids stick around, the parents stick around... Could be good for hat. Who knows!)
I begin my drawings with the line work, so it really does look like a colouring book.

Also, (another picture I don't have to show off yet) some young girls came along and set up a few feet away from me with their own pastels. They drew suns and mushrooms and piggies. I tried to give them a toonie each, but they didn't want it. (Probably taught to not take money from dirty strangers.)
                          I really enjoyed their presence.

This little number was called "Loonie on a Uni vs. Hawaiian Flyin' Fish"

                          My hat line:

                          "Help buy my:
                          Lunch
                          Mortgage
                          Love"

                          (with a hat beside each.)

                          I got lots of lovin'.
