    wild west

Hi haven't posted for a long time but this work took Diana and me about 3weeks in some extreme weather to make.

Diana is resposible for the portraits taken from a book with old photos of characters from the Jessie James gang and 10 yrs later some of the characters from the Ok corral shoot out in Toombstone Arizona.
The Indian characters are Sitting Bull and Red Cloud.
I drew the Fred Remmington and mapped it out using a grid.
Last year we drew our Aussie outlaws Ben Hall and his gang and Ned kelly unmasked. and his gang and a Tom Roberts copy.

I'll put up a detail later if any one is interested . Got a good rapport from our Melbourne audiences and foreigners. Also accompanied by a few wild west songs that didn't go down too badly.

        Dangers of pavement art

Rachel, that's great for a three houry.. But teenage boys are The worst demographic to aim for if you want the buckaroos!.. Grannies and kiddies much better! Be really careful of fingers.. a former student rubbed a microscopic glass shard into finger, resulting in a heart-filter, a blood born disease, and many many weeks in hospital. I now wear light cotton disposable gloves if I think the ground looks Really dirty and the area is inhabited by possible icky-disease (your ground looked nice and clean luckily). They are annoying to work in, but you can use your fingers for rubbing if you can't break the habit (best use other stuff, tho). Re: allergy, my brother had a bad reaction (red raw rash) to pastels on the Oz Open job we did together (a Cadmium /chrome yellow by "Unison"), or maybe it was the Suncreen, or the toxic chemical cocktail that resulted.

Anyway, here's a pic I did at a traders' day last month.. I can't draw a gum leaf without thinking of Peter! So- we can swap eggs, with gumleaves..

          Thanks.
          And gorgeous piece.

After that day I had a bad reaction I ended up getting very, very sick, and I haven't had a reaction since. So here's hoping it was just a weird bug.

I started using hunks of foam I have left over from building toys, to blend. I'll look into gloves though, as it just seems like a good idea.

Curious -- how long did this last one (the butterfly/leaves) take you and how big is it?

Well, maybe I WILL just keep telling myself that.

            Painted lady

The butterfly was a one day piece for a small suburban art day at a shopping village. The butterfly's about 1.2m, leaves scattered over 3m+. I've done lots of butterflies the past few years, still many more to do... The pic could have done with another layer of detail- highlights and shadow, (like most of my works!) but that's pavement art- subject to elemental weather, daylight and converstaions!

              P.art as Circle Show???

Cold, miserable, wintery weather in Melb and while we're getting some (not enough) desperately needed rain it's pretty crappy for p.artists. Melbournians don't handle the cold very well and crowds drop incredibly. I don't think many actually have the clothes for it.

Tomorrow and Sunday look cold but fine and I'm going out to debut a p.art circle show. I'm sort of shit scared but loving it. I have done the show once, last week, on a very rainy day, under the huge awning of a defunct tyre store near my house. It was mostly to time and film the thing but I ended up with an accidental audience of 9 people. They said it was fun and made my day. The pic attached is of my "volunteer", the egg is real.

It's called "The Art of Campfire Cooking" and I'm doing eggs and bacon breakfast for the entire promenade of Southbank. I'll put a pic or two up next week. Nick Nickolas is going to watch, film and crit it for me on Sun. afternoon (hopefully after at least 2 tries at it). Unfortunately, I have no music yet so I'll have to talk my way through the whole thing, maybe not so bad, I'll find out.

At least if I die, there won't be too many people watching and the drawing will always make me something.

PS. Rachel, have you tried p.art again and how did the Tennis application go?

I worked on a piece outside one of my doors, in a little alley between houses about three weeks ago, but never got a chance to finish it. It's just a replica of one of my paintings. It's still there (lots of medium). I shoudl just top it off and take a picture.
I've been working way too many animation/design jobs, all from home, and knew I couldn't get OUT out, but lately I can't even justify the time to step out into the alley.
The work should slow down in September, so I'm hoping for more time to work on p.art and a better show.

                The Canada Tennis Tournament:
So far it looks like a go.
I'm trying to figure out how to make it funner though. What they want is a 15-20 foot Roger's Cup logo. They said I could incorporate things around/behind the logo. Just a logo isn't going to be appreciated by people. ...and that's friggen huge.
I might try to convince them that's too big.
I took all the advice from p.arters I could get to give them a quote and stuff.
I estimated it would take three days. ...I would have liked to have said more, but I can't afford the time off my day job.

They sounded very excited about the idea, actually. So that's fun.
Well, maybe I WILL just keep telling myself that.

Yesterday was horrid, cold, wet and crappy but today was fine and sunny, though still cold.
The show was pretty ordinary, the idea might be great but my performance was crap. I learned that you can't attract a crowd with a drawing of crumpled newspaper (I can draw a crowd any time but that makes a pretty boring p.art picture too). Even drawing the kindling and then "lighting" the fire doesn't hook people despite the fact that it can happen in just a few minutes.

That said, the experiment worked better than I thought it would as I'm planning it for events and venues other than Southbank's busking pitches. I even made some money.

                      Serious thanks

The best part about going out with this new idea today was the support I got from the Melb. performers community, Mort, Julz, Matt and most especially Nick who stayed, watched and filmed my clumsy efforts then sat over a beer or two and offered much valuable criticism (mostly positive ideas).
Winter in Melb. can be pretty ordinary but I doubt there are many better places to work out a new concept. Many thanks to everyone.

Then next step in the drawing, after breakfast, is to redraw the fire, new logs etc to disappear the frypan, and then add a 3D "spit" to cook lunch. I'm thinking barbequed rabbit.

I'd really appreciate it if readers of this thread had a look at http://www.performers.net/forums/sho...9351#post39351 and offered opinions. It is a matter that I think deserves thought.

                            Julian Beever's website

An email is making the rounds with photos of the pavement art of Julian Beever. I was very impressed with his work so did a search to find his website.

Have a good look at a few of the 3D images. Nice stuff.

Julian is "le maitre des maitres", "il padrone dei padroni", the master of masters.

I think his stuff is fantastic. Great imagination, technique, structure, narrative and humour, he's got it all.

The little shit is about 20yrs younger than me too.
