i'm not into fantasy & have never read terry prachett. but, thank you for clarifying that for me. given that i have little point of reference for his work it was needed.

Firegirl - It's ok, many people mistake Terry Pratchett for Elf Spotting Dungeon & Dragons. But it is actually satirical, intelligent and very very funny. I reccomend it to everybody and you should start with "The Colour of Magic."

Martin - I eny you and wish I were on a ski holiday. *sighs* Oh how the rich and famous live...

perhaps i will - i'll at least put it on the list to check out... if i don't like it i'll just chalk it up to... eh. you know.

i just finished a good david sedaris book (satire) and am about to start on "mirror, mirror" by gregory maguire (author of "wicked" - which i thought i was going to hate - not being into fantasy and all - but, got sucked into rather quickly. hopefully, "mirror, mirror" will be as good...)

next on the list is a book i've been saving and scrimping to buy... "the outlaw bible of american literature." with essays from such noted great counter culture writers as lester bangs and the now deceased hunter s. thompson - it's bound to be a great read.

after that - a book by marge piercey ("the moon is always female") and a biography of ted hughes and sylvia plath's marriage - called "her husband."

quite a long list - but, i'm sure i'll get to some prachett by the end of the month.

i'll get back to you with my opinion.

i have a bunch of friends who love prachett - i just have never had much of a tolerance for fantasy writing... i suppose though with all the glowing recs i've recieved for his books over the past few years i should just stop being so damn stubborn and set in my ways and just give one of the books a chance.

which would you rec starting with?

start with ''The Colour Of Magic'' - thats if you were referring to which Terry book to start with....I never heard of him, until a friend gave me three of his books for xmas, now I've got about 8 of his Diskworld series, and I'm loving them

"Good Omens", which he did w/ Neil Gaiman, is great fun!

David Sedaris is SOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo funny!!! Which book did you read? My personal favorite is "Naked" but "Barrel Fever" and "Me Talk Pretty One Day" are right up there. I attended a live reading last year, but it was kind of uncomfortable being surrounded by so many NPR geeks (of which I am one).

thanks for the suggestions, magrat & ren man.

etienne - i just got done reading "me talk pretty one day" - my mum gave it to me for xmas this year & it'd been sitting on my desk for the better part of two months waiting to be read. it was very, very funny. i enjoyed it muchly.

my parents really like sedaris a lot - they went to see a live reading with him in cleveland. my dad said he was laughing so hard the whole time he nearly wet himself.

David's pretty funny, but the genius in that family lies in his sister, Amy.

the feature film of Strangers with Candy was very well received at Sundance, although hardcore fans say it that every line / gag in the film was pulled out of the TV show.

What pieces did he read? A friend just played a recording of one of his tour readings--you may be on that CD.
