Olympics A Special Day to remember

I had a long talk with Master Lee today and he says he hasn't seen Lee Ross this happy since Pepe left Brisbane after Expo '88.

P.S. I did a gig today with Jason Garfield, Ivan Percel and Matt Hall ... afterwards (at a raffel for charity) I hit a hole in one (with a 9 iron) ... I only bought one ticket ... $1 ... there is a God ... he's back now ... apparently he was busy in Spain.

P.S. drinks on me next time !

A little more hype makes the world go round...

Sorry for the brag, but I have great news: (and besides, that's what this topic is for!)

My show (The Acme Miniature Circus) was picked as one of the top
picks for the Spoleto USA Festival by The Charleston Post and Courier
      (charleston.net)

(You may need to register first) In case you couldn't be bothered, here's the relevant part....

      =========================================
SPOLETIANS: One week from today, Spoletians will descend upon the
Lowcountry like a cicadian Brood X... eating, drinking, soaking up art,
      making Chinese operatic sounds.

Opening ceremonies are at noon next Friday on the corner of Meeting and
Broad streets at City Hall. Mayor Joe Riley will proclaim the start of
Spoleto Festival USA 2004 (May 28-June 13) and the bells of St. Michael's
will ring. The speaker and artists who will perform are both top
      secret...
until next Friday, that is. Watch your P&C for details. Wear a hat. The
sun at that corner is brutal at noon. It's Our Favorite Price and very
      festive.

      GMLc's Spoleto Picks:

      1) Flaming sculpture will be at I'On's Mount Pleasant Amphitheater...
      May 28, 8 p.m.

      2) Trained performing fleas of the Acme Miniature Flea Circus will
perform "spectacular circus stunts as seen before (and on top of) the
crowned heads of Europe"... June 2-13, various times, Chapel Theatre,
      College of Charleston.

      ============================

      And here's the ticket information:

      LISTING:

Madge, Trained Fleas Performing Spectacular Circus Stunts As Seen Before

        Just need a lil hype

I just got back from Hollywood, CA where i was filming an episode of ABC Family's top rated show, Switched....it will air in 5-6 weeks, and on thursday I am opening for Hanson as they make a stop in Milwaukee. (yes, the MMmbopp guys) It's always hard to perform in front of hundreds of screaming girls, but someone's gotta do it. Look out Justin Timberlake.

Flea circus featured on Cover of the Charleston City Paper

I'm finishing my run up here at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and things are going Jim Dandy. Got a great review in the Post & Courier, great preview articles in the Post & Courier, the Charleston City Paper, and the Savannah Morning News, and recently made the cover of the Charleston City Paper! (Which is such a good photo, I'm planning on keeping it in my publicity roster. (Already talked to the photographer!)

                Bravo Nick!

Famous told me you are a very good magician, but I had no idea you were that good! So sorry I didn't catch up with you in Auckland.

                      Juggling Independence

Sunday was "Independence Day" here in the US. Fireworks, barbeques and lots of cars, hood open, and guys standing around them, beer in hand, grunting as they offered advice about an air-intake valve or carburetor. For the fist time in an embarrassingly long while, I had a gig in Indianapolis doing stilts and juggling behind the Indiana State Museum along the canal at White River State Park to herald in the evening's firework finale. It was one of those gigs that slipped in under my radar, and in spite of my efforts, I got it anyway.

The drive to Indy is about an hour from home, and my wife Lisa went with me to help out with the costume and accessories associated with this one. I was not looking forward to this one at all, and bitched about it all the way. I like doing the stilts in many ways, but the costume is very hot, and even though I know that everyone likes it and thinks that it is really interesting, because I can't see (or breathe) very well in the mask, I never get to witness any of their reactions. I am simply trying to focus through the tiny slit-eyes to make sure that I don't step on anyone's toes or trip on some loose stone in the sidewalk. The thought of having to wander about in the July heat just wasn't a very appealing one.

Then, add onto that, there was some backward business with the booking agent and the client's agent. Because the client's agent found me at an event that the second agent booked for me last year, I did not let them book me directly. Yes, it meant that there was a second commission to pay, but looking to the long run, I prefer to pay the extra bucks in exchange for the extra work. Agent #1 was going into this one ticked off, and agent #2 didn't want to talk to her at all, so I got to contact the client directly to work out the show details. (So, why am I paying these guys commissions anyway?) Anyway, there was unnecessary silliness with who-could-decide-what.

Initially, I was to do a couple hours of roving on stilts and juggling, followed by a thirty minute show on the main stage. Three days before, I was informed that I was moved off of the main stage and that they wanted a more casual street show. Another caveat of this one...

When I arrived at the site, I found where they wanted me to perform. The client couldn't have picked a worse spot to do a show if they had scheduled me to perform in front of the dumpsters. So, after two hours of some serious sweat-equity on stilts, I scoped out a better spot for a circle show and politely told the client that I would do my thirty minute spot right by the main doors with my back to the canal.

P.Net's Jeannette was there with some of her gang when I setup for my show. They politely sat down in the front row to witness the spectacle that would be the first street-type show that I have tried to do in over a decade! Of course, I didn't really have anything planned, but I brought lots of stuff to fill the time. It was an interesting experience.

In a weird way, I was nervous until I started, then I felt amazingly comfortable. Standing in my roped off "stage", talking with the audience, doing my thing was a blast from the past. It was really a fun feeling because I could tell that there was a sharp street show in me, even though I couldn't remember any of the words. Consequently, there were very few "jokes", lots of drops, but good vibes all around. By the time I got to the fire finale, I had collected a nice, tight crowd. In the half-hour set, I only saw one group leave mid-way, and the gap that they left behind was quickly filled from the back rows. Aftermath estimates claim a crowd of about 400, which is pretty impressive considering the size of the venue, no amp, and the number of people that were even down in the park at that time.

In the end, I had a great time, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Since I was being paid, I didn't pass the hat, but still had many people hand me tips after the show. It's funny how the dollars that are handed to you have more value than the ones that are written on the paychecks.

Beaux Arts Festival on the Mountain

Steamboat Pilot & Today Newspaper, dated Sunday August 8, 2004 Front page above the fold:

"Drawn by the energetic drumming of the New York Street Boys, the soulful serenades of Carrie Elkin and a 15 (sic) - foot - tall puppet, visitors meandered through an array of attractions Saturday at the Beaux Arts on the Mountain festival.

Whether it was high-end jewelry, photography and other arts, or face painting, stilts and bocce ball, the event offered something for everyone."

The article continues for several more photographs . Photos on the back page of the first section include photos of a mother and daughter racing on our old fashioned hand held wood stilts, and a very nice photo and caption of the New York Street Boys.

                            Caption:

"The New York Street Boys street percussion group from Denver, from left, Craiog Olsen, Dustin Amds and Dean Hirschfield, used many items to bang the drums, including each other's hard hats."

I was performing at another festival that weekend, so my partner, Jerry Williams, took "Thirsty - the Friendly Giant Parade Puppet", and a few dozen sets of stilts up the mountain.

I always try and check out any post event media coverage and found this article. Hope you enjoy it!

thanx for the heads up Stretch. I'll be sure to look for the article. Oh by the way, you have know idea how tempting your stilts made of buckets were to us when we realized that all of the buckets we had brought to the gig were broken.
