blah, blah, blah: yes or no, stay or go

Speaking for myself, if this section were to be blocked for the rest of the year, I can't see that it would be missed by more than 5 members. And why should those 5 be allowed to bring down the entire board?

I think abuse in it's own thread is not a bad thing.

People don't have to read it. There are lots of threads.

            Ah, the memories . . .

Thanks Martin! Memories of being toasty warm in my insulated Jammies, inside a sleeping bag, under my blanke, watching late night Benny Hill in the winter of '81, in Michigan, in my unheated home. Was laid off from work, couldn't afford to heat the house, so I had the gas shut off. Did just fine!

              STAY

Pure, unadulterated drivel. This forum is for gossip, hype, rants, and the general discourse performers have backstage. PERFORMERS: Remember, this is still a public forum. NON-PERFORMERS: WARNING: This board is UNCENSORED and UN-EDITED. Enter and read at your own discretion!

that is what it says as a description of "blah, blah, blah..."

i don't think it should go. there are lots of amusing threads which more than five people participate in. i think that we all need to take a step back and realize that p.net is "still a public forum" and try to keep in mind that our drivel may be the first and last impression which people have of p.net, street/variety performing and performers... i'm saying this as someone who is just as guilty of behaving badly as anyone else.

i don't think that if you remove "blah, blah, blah" it's going to control the natural tendancies of performers (dramatic, overly sensitive, prone to mischief) to snipe at each other and start threads like "martin kicks arse." over the four years or so i've been a member of these boards i've seen many threads of this nature... not only this - i've seen ot conversations w/in perfectly normal threads of this variety. i think that by removing "blah, blah, blah" (ie: taking away the approved of forum for such assholish behavior - which we are ALL prone to - with few exceptions) the participants on this forum will only take the drivel and pollute the rest of the boards with it.

i like the drivel confined to "blah, blah, blah." at least i know if i choose to read this portion of p.net what i will be getting myself into. i've had some good conversations here - both constructive and amusing... i've seen (and, participated in) some really infantile bitch fights between p.net members... which is amusing of it's own right.

i like that the rest of the forum stays on topic (pretty much) and think that this is largely due to the existance of "blah, blah, blah."

it's like having a smokers lounge. you know people won't be trying to sneak ciggs other places because they have someplace to be.

so - i say: BLAH, BLAH, BLAH - STAY.

though, in the end it really is jim's decision. and, i trust in his wisdom...

Folks, there was never a threat to REMOVE Blah Blah Blah. Chance made it sound that way when he titled this thread. If you read what I wrote in the Martin Kicks Arse thread here, I never said anything about killing the forum. I just said I was thinking about closing it a couple days a week to inspire people to visit the other forums on, say, Tuesdays and Thursdays, or something. Kind of like when you were little and your mom made you turn off the TV and go outside after you had been sitting there for hours on end. Remember that?

I would never delete the forum. We definitely need a place to hang out and blow off steam. But the intention of that forum was, originally, to catch the overflow topics that didn't fit anywhere else or were slightly off the topic of performing. It was not intended to be a place for people to sign up, log in and then NEVER leave. And there ARE people who have ONLY posted in Blah Blah Blah. I would hope that if you are hanging out here, you have some interest or commitment to performing. I would hope you'd be able to contribute to discussions (outside of B.B.B.) in some positive way. Sure, post something funny or off topic in the green room once in a while, but don't just live there. It's just not adding to the community.

Remember, this IS a public forum. Not only do agents and producers occasionally browse through here, but so do thousands of other performers. If somebody new comes through and sees that Today's Active Topics include 5 threads of people bickering about their favorite tv shows and no one talking in any other forum, they're going to get a poor impression of this place, leave and probably not come back. I'd rather have them stick around and add to the community. The more people we have posting here and sharing their knowledge, the better off we'll ALL be. It's that simple.

Has anyone seen today's active topics? BRAVO! That's what I'm talking about.

                  Huh?

I said I voted to close it for the rest of the year. I said nothing about deletion.

I don't think this issue is actually open to debate or votes.

P'net is not any-one's personal play-ground or self-justification venue. Period.

If good natured insults and word play turn into libellous confrontations, something has to be done.

To my knowledge, in 5 years, only 4 of our 1500 odd members have ever had to be censored, one of them twice.

Every time, it has caused dozens of private emails and lots of angst to all concerned.

The request is simple "Pls do not abuse p.net".
                    Every-one should watch their drawers!

Yes, that's what you said in your post, but your thread title "Blah Blah Blah yes or no, stay or go" made it SOUND like there was a deletion/removal possibility... which is why others below seem to be "voting" for it to "stay."

IT WILL NEVER BE DELETED. And if it is ever "CLOSED" it will only be for a short time and by "CLOSED" I mean, it will be READABLE, but you will not be allowed to POST or REPLY. But again, it doesn't even seem like that will happen.

Go outside and get some fresh air folks.

Perhaps there ought to be some sort of a tithe system wherein members earn "post points" by submitting helpful or topical information, which they can then piss away on more blathersome topics, hmmmm? <drip ... drip ... drip>

Speaking as a mom who regularly admonishes her children to "turn the damned computer off before you get square eyes and get outside", I can say that I do that because I am responsible for my children's health and development (AND because I want my damned computer back).

Jim, you are not responsible for members' health - mental, physical or psychosocial - though you admittedly carry the burden of ensuring p.net is functioning and has a future. It is a large responsibility that must weigh heavy at times, especially when that work seems unappreciated. But I caution you, parent to parent-figure, not to be too heavy-handed.

The waste of bandwidth that's been a goodly chunck of p.net of late has been, at best, midly entertaining in a car-crashy way, and at worst, a name-calling and mud-flinging "I'm the King of the Castle" spat between people acting childish. (If anyone wants to take a swipe at me for that comment, I defy you to show me the maturity and wisdom of your comments - most of the exchanges can be summed up by "I know you are, but what am I" or "I'm rubber and you're glue ...".) Like most children's spats, even the most tenacious ought to blow over when they get tired or bored or someone's toy gets broken.

By all means, send one to the slide, one to the sandbox, and one to the swings. But locking up the playground won't teach anyone what kind of behaviour is expected when there's many people who want to play.

                          Furthermore ...

And stop worrying about what "people" will think. Any producer or agent worth their salt has more sources of opinion and information than p.net. (For the record, I would venture to say that after first-hand experience with an artist, the opinions of fellow producers/agents rank most important.) I will not dispute that things posted on p.net DO form part of an overall opinion of an individual, sure. But anyone who makes an assessment of an entire community based on a thread in a discussion forum is gonna get bitten in the ass by the universe one way or another.

I have maintained my silence too long.

I for one am appalled, shocked, astonished, and outraged at the childish, abusive, cruel and highly degenerative state of the posts in the blah blah section of this fine website over the last month or so.
It would seem some people have nothing better to do that fan their own inflated sense of self worth, using the gifts god gave them in petty egotistical squabbles that do little to advance our collective dignity as clowns and jugglers and escape artists.
I have a pretty good idea who most of the 5 people chance alluded to are and I'd just like to say right here and now that if any of these individuals waste our collective brainwidth with any more of this mean and ugly guttersniping. Then I will personally kick their arses.
                            Thank you.
