Oh! I got it! They're KIDS!

good god... magrat - dear - you and jester really have shown quite clearly exactly what twits you are.

      nonsensical twits.

text language is not a LEGITIMATE form of language. it is slang... no, no... it's not EVEN slang - it's abbreviation. bad abbreviation.

until you can show me where there is a ;P in the dictionary - I will not acknowledge "txt" as anything other than a bunch of raver kids who are too ignorant and lazy to use all the functioning keys of their keyboard.

you have also clearly portrayed your exact ages... oh, sweetie-things... shouldn't both of you be in school at the moment? your mommies are going to be so upset that you are ditching again to play on the p.net... shame on you.

I find it laughable that you said "the 20 some things..." it shows so clearly how old you are - implying that you think that being in your twenties is "old."

      yah... well... not quite.

le sigh... you two were the slowest swimmers in the gene pool for sure... what the hell will our world become when idiotic raver kids like the two of you take over?

a legitimate form of english that you get grants when shakespeare is performed in it? oh, please. you show me somewhere that they're performing txt shakespeare and I’ll print out this whole thread and eat it, piece by piece.

      now bugger off.

the Gene Pool. Hi, what are you doing here in the shallow end?

The language of Mobile Phone texting is I beleive a Mnemonics language.

Pidgeon English is apparently a real language while Geordi is a dialect.

There are many books and dictionaries on the subject of text mnemonics. Language is beautiful in many many forms. So I assume you love the written word, but you hate the language of text messaging. Maybe you could hold the worlds first mobile phone burning ceremony.

Clearly your childhood is a long way past you. I personally am flattered that you think I am younger than I really am.

Can't bugger off just yet, this thread isn't entirely finished. You are however free to leave this thread whenever you like.

            PUT IT ASIDE?

            magrat,
you are assuming that I was ever affected by your drivel in the first place.

and, while your incoherent and idiotic rambling are mildly amusing (more on the annoying side, actually) the last thing in the world which they have done is affect me...

I don't need to "put it aside" as there is NOTHING to put aside.

get a life other than on the p.net... or, perhaps you should wind your way back to high school where you belong.

I never said I thought it was affecting to, nor was I assuming it did, I want to put it aside and forget about, thats all I suggest, and I do have a life thankyou, might be totally screwed up and a mess but its a life.

mnemonics is a device relating to assisting memory. it is not a language. so what you're saying is that "moblie phone texting" is a way of abbreviating words so one might REMEMBER how they're spelled?

                what a load of crap.

jester - whatever you're doing with this thread - get to the point, already.

You are welcome to ignore this thread, it is a big board and it is very easy to choose the threads you are interested in. That is why Jim moved the Forum to a multiple threads format.

If I was to tell you what the point of this forum is it would defeat the object of the excercise.

Yes mnemonics are memory aids, but mnemonics have become another form of "Jargon" and thus are filtering into the language.
mnemonics are used in txt messaging, which was originally designed an aid to business and mnemonics came with the original manuals to keep them short as bandwidth was very low at that time.

The industry had no idea that kids would take to it so readily.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert, but you clearly know even less than I do. Do you really think that arguing mnemonics for the sheer hell of it is in anyway fun?

Cos I do. I'm happy if you are.

text isn't a language. i don't care how you justify it - it's just not. it's slang at best. and, my point still stands - people who want to be taken seriously don't speak in slang.

maybe if you pull it into a tangential argument you could say it's "technical language."

which is why in a job interview you don't go around saying "ain't" or "y'all" or "fo' shizzel" or "cuz..." because, it makes you look stupid.

though it is my opinion that the individuals who use this raver kid bullshit slang don't need much help looking stupid in the first place.

i reiterate: YOU NEED TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THE RULES BEFORE YOU CAN GO AROUND BREAKING THEM.

it's very hard to take someone who peppers their writing with "txt" seriously.

                    a story/RANT:

i write grants for a small theatre company of which i am a member. i am in the middle of writing a big grant to the nea for this company. the nea rep. and i copy the artistic director (who is more of an artist with authority than a business person...) on all of the emails which go between us.

i've instructed this artistic director NOT TO RESPOND to any of them.

                    why?

because, the one time she DID reply (after i told her that i would handle it - but, that is a different story) this is what it looked like:

                    dear Maureen,
i have a copy of the 501 (c)(3) -- but, i diddn't send it cuz you should have one on file for us.

but, if you need it i can send it again.
                    thanks man,
                    artistic director

HOW FUCKING UNPROFESSIONAL DOES IT LOOK TO PUT "EMOTIONCONS" AND "TXT" INTO A BUSINESS LETTER?

give me a effing break! are you kidding me? how is the NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS going to take anything we send them ever again seriously after that?

the language assumes familiarity. it's informal. it's SLANG. and, when you are trying to convince someone that you are an intelligent individual YOU DON'T USE IT.

i hardly use it in the first place... because, it just reads stupid.

i'll admit that this is my own pet peeve. i grew up with an english teacher for a mother; and, among the varied degrees i hold - english is one of them. i HATE it when people use "txt" as a legitimate form of language. if you're trying to argue persuasively, convince me of something or even intimidate me - you lose credibility AUTOMATICALLY if you do so using "txt."

                    END RANT.

                    that is all.

Okay it's not a proper language. It's slang. Slang is part of language.

I don't think Magrat was applying to you for a job or trying to make the right impression at the time.

In the UK we forgive Americans on paper for not being able to spell correctly. The more important the paper the more likely we are to forgive.

                        Good Rant though.

I felt the angle you were coming from. It's ironic that something which is really not important can be more irritating than something which is.

For example, constant mispronounciation of ones name can inspire more ill feelings than somebody who actually steals from you. This is how con artists work, this is how magicians work.

If you look at the Too Harsh thread you'll see I have already covered my feelings on deskbound pedants.

I will say that once I was threatened very politely in a very controlled tone of voice with not one ounce of laziness in the speech of the man who threatend me. It was one of the most frightening moments of my life. However, it made me focus on his problem and he was very reasonable in listening to my position.

It saved a lot of Time.

i have qualified that all by saying that it's my own pet peeve.

i understand that magrat wasn't applying for a job or trying to impress me. however, as i stated in my thesis statement, it is my feeling that people who use this particular form of slang shoot themselves in the foot by coming out of the starting gate looking stupid.

i wasn't starting an argument with an incorrect premise. mostly because, i was not starting an argument in the first place. i was commenting on something which i find irratating. making my opinion of people who use slang as a regular portion of language known. you know my opinion now. so i'm happy to leave it be.

fyi - slang is defined in the dictonary as "informal, nonstandard vocabulary." which pretty much supports my point of view. it is the bastard cousin of proper language.

jester - you were almost funny there with the comment about those from the uk forgiving americans for not spelling properly on paper.

i suppose you're refering to the whole realiSe/realiZe... coloUr/color... thing? the irony of that is i just had a lengthy debate with a friend about which is the proper spelling... which lead into another rant on my part about a new trend which seems to be developing in my part of the country... one which is more grating on one's nerves than the whole speaking like a stupid raver kid thing is...

                              false brittishness.

where american urban-hipsters co-opt the language of other countries/cultures as their own. most notedly - the colloquisms of the uk. it drives me CRAZY when these aforementioned urban-hipsters go around saying things like:

"I have to go fill up my car with petrol."
                              "Hold the lift for me."
"I just dropped your perscription off at the chemist."

for crying out loud! you twat! you were born and raised in OHIO! there is NO WAY i believe that you ever were taught to use those phrases as part of your every day language. just use gas, elevator and drugstore - for gods sake! and, knock that crappy accent out of your mouth, too... it's offensive and pretentious.

i say this - having nothing but love for many, many people from the UK (individually, one at a time) - my mother was born in dublin, ireland... i love irish accents, brittish accents and austrailian accents... LOVE THEM. but, not faked ones by midwestern transplant urban-hipster twats!

                              blah!

                              end of other rant.

and, for the record - i get lots of crap from many of my uk friends about how i cannot "speak the queen's english" or that i "spell like an american."
