    Pass the Hat for Jim

I just got home from the Sparks Street Fest where the topic of what a great resource this site is came up frequently, as it usually does. Not only is it a way for us to keep in touch or take the piss out of eachother, its also a really great way to find work or find performers. That being said, there are often times that I feel guilty for never sending any money to Jim. From what I've heard, most of us should probably feel the weight of this guilt. Jim puts a lot of time and, lets face it, money into this site and does a great job of keeping it running for us.
I have never sent him any money because it never seems to be the right time to do it, or more simply, I'm lazy. Thats why I'm posting this thread. Its time for us to get some money Jims way. We came up with a few ideas in Ottawa that we would like to get rolling and would like to see what other people might come up with.
    Idea #1
-At festivals there is always people saying how much they hate their small change, they will even tell their audience that they don't want it. However if you put together all of the unwanted change from everybody at the festivals, it could add up to a good deal. That's why we need to start "Pennies Plus for P-net"
At each festival, we can put out a fishbowl for the change that the performers don't want to roll or feel like contributing in the bowl and then one of the performers at the festival is responsible for sending a money order to Jim.
    Idea #2
-Checkerboard has suggested that we start doing, whenever possible, a group show in support of P-Net. Five min. of your time in a show could help Jim get the thanks he deserves. If we can get event planners support on this it would be really helpfull.
David is going to Waterloo and Windsor, and Ash Circle is on their way to Halifax. They are both going to try and get the ball rolling in those cities. We did what we could in Ottawa. Any other ideas? Let's start supporting the resource that many of us rely so heavily on.
And don't walk away like those cheap bastards. (sorry, thats the only time I've used that)
One last thing- when you do send the money orders, it will save Jim a lot of money if you have the post office convert it to US

Wow, 58 views and not one reply.

It's a good idea, Dean (zat-right?) that has come up before but not followed through much.

But the internet has grown somewhat, as has web banking and now it's probably possible to set up some hassle free system by which Jim can have a hat.

It is really up to Jim. It is as simple as giving us a BSB number and an account number or setting up a paypal acc..

I hereby challenge Jim to do so

or I will send him all the coins (mostly indecipherably foreign) in the drawers of the sideboard and the hundreds perhaps thousands of Marks, Francs, Gilders and countless Lire that became worthless on the introduction of the Euro. There is the odd nickle, looney or quarter amongst them.

I think many of us have got some very valuable things through this site and if their was an account, we would sling something into it when the opportunity arose.

    Whatya say Jim?

      for love & $

      Hey Peter,
Not to make anyone feel cheap but I sent Jim a small check awhile back (although he deserves more) ... so yeah, if you can give , please give and if you can't well then ...

P.S. I have a massive collection of old street bills n' coins (and other weird shit like hotel keys) from all over the world (some from countries I performed in) (some from tourists visiting the states) ... one thing they all have in common is they were put in my hat (even a AMEX gold card) ... since my street fightin' days are all but gone I wonder if you have anything you could pass my way ... I will gladly reimburse you (or Jim if you like) for the honor ...

        $$$

Greetings allc The time, energy and money it takes to keep this site going is a gift Jim has given to the Performance community and most who visit this site seem to quickly discover what a fantastic resource it isc My reasons for wanting to help get some money into Jims hands are also somewhat self motivated.

Back in 1997 I created the performers database as an on-line resource that, much like P.Net, was meant to allow free access to information. I found it incredibly frustrating that agents and certain festival producers werenft willing to give out address information for performers (my friends), so created to database so that anyone who wanted to post their info to a free resource could.

I spent a schwack of money to have this resource created, to upgrade, and maintain it. Not to mention the day-to-day up keep to ensure that the information is up-to-date and members can find the info that theyfre looking for.

I approached Jim a few months ago and suggested that this resource should be moved to the Performers.net site. It seems that many people think that the two resources are part of the same system anyway, and all the folks that Ifve asked seem to agree that migrating the database to the P.Net site seems to make a lot of sense. The database is a resource that shouldnft exist on an individualfs web site, but rather in a more neutral setting like P.Net.

Jim and I are tentatively looking at making this happen in the Fall/Winter when we both have more time to execute such a migration/merger, but I have a feeling that itfs going to suck up a bunch of our time and energy and may require some coding that is beyond our knowledge which will mean getting someone in to build some custom code to make this all workc There will be time energy and money spent to make this happen, so for my part, Ifm hoping that by organizing a couple of team shows it will help to come up with some of the $$$ needed to make this happen. Ifve been in touch with Ken Brandes in Windsor and he seems cool with the idea of a group show in benefit of P.Net, and will also see what I can organize when I get to Waterloo.

If others out there are at festivals in the next weeks/months and could consider doing the same, put together a 30 | 45 minute show where all you have to do is contribute some of your time and talent to benefit show it will mean that the time, and talent that has gone into P.Net thus far and the time and energy that will go into it in the coming months are recognized and compensated. I look forward to working with any who are interested in Windsor and Waterloo and hope others will do the same at other Festivals around the world.

Ok, one more time. Some of us at the Ottawa fest found good ways that we could get something rolling. If nothing more, lets discuss what came of those discussions. Furthermore, lets point out what came (fiscally) for P-Net that weekend (meek as it may be) not numbers, but that something happened.
People said that they would start some kind of fund for the site. Did it happen? what was the response?
Next, somebody said that this is now in Jim's hands...
Piss off. Has Jim not done enough?
I know it's hard, but lets make an effort
Next, and on a more personal note, this is the first thread that I have started, I don't want it to die so quickly.
Lastly, Karl speaks of a world in which we are flown to vacation world just for contributions, which in the end we find is bankrolled by Mr. Millar. Humorus, yes. desireable, yes. Possible, maybe. Think of Jimmy Buffet, obnoxious as he is to listen to, think of living the life he preaches, all on Al's tab.

P.S. Jim, if we ever meet, you better not pretend to not know me... Like Master Lee did intentionally for five years.

            Hello pnetters,

I would like to announce that last week a money order for $850.00 (US Dollars!) was sent to me by David Aiken (aka Checkerboard Guy.) The money was raised at the Windsor Busker Festival a couple weeks ago. I am not sure who participated in the group show that generated the money, but I would like to graciously thank them here. I'd also like to thank David for putting it all together, going to the bank, changing the money and mailing the money order. Without him, it wouldn't have happened... so thanks, Dave. He also hinted that I should give a very special shout out to Rob Torres, so Rob... Thank you very much. I'd also like to mention that Ken Brandes (director of the Windsor fest) was totally supportive of a special fund-raising group show. Thanks Ken.

David also collected $50 from the USA breakdancers in Waterloo and I hear that cash is still on the way, so thanks guys.

All in all, David Aiken, along with performers from Windsor and Waterloo raised $900 for performers.net in the span of about a week! I think that's pretty amazing and I am incredibly grateful.

There WILL be improvements to performers.net by the end of the year (as soon as I get some free time) and that cash will definitely help out. If anyone else wants to organize a fundraising group show, I'd gladly accept the proceeds!

From the bottom of my hard drive, Thanks everyone!

            Jim

P.S. I used to have a paypal donation link here, but it was only used twice in six months... and then paypal turned evil and I closed my account. If you want to mail in a donation, there is information on this page explaining how to do it.

Where did all the money come from?

              Hey Hey...

I never really followed up on what happened in Windsor and Waterloo...well apart from sending a schwack of cash to Jim.

Ken Brandes in Windsor (along with Lynne Sosnowski) got totally behind the cause of the P.Net fund raiser. We did one kids show on Friday Afternoon and half the proceeds went to P.Net, the other half to Big Brothers and Sisters. Then on Sunday we passed the hat at the end of the finale show and again half of the proceeds went to P.Net and half to the Big Brothers/Sisters. That money along with a huge contribution from Rob Tores went together to form the $850.00 money order that got sent from Windsor.

In Waterloo I was less organized and the weather was crappier - a lot of rain there this year. So... A Group show for P.Net never materialzed. The USA Break Dancers did however follow a suggestion that Dean had proposed in his eariler post of contributing all of their pennies, nickles and dimes to the P.Net cause, I added a bit myself and brought the total up to US$50.00 (I'm all about nice round numbers) which "Stitch" said he'd be willing to deliver to Jim in Boston. (If it hasn't arrived yet Jim, you know who to call)

So... there you go... A nice total of $900.00 towards the P.Net cause which will hopefully assist Jim and I to merge the cbg Database with the P.Net site. We're aiming to get started on this project in a couple of weeks once the chaos of the Summer season has settled down somewhat. For my part, I was happy to help get this money to Jim and am looking forward to doing my part in ensuring the growth and improvement of this incredibly valuable on-line resource.

              Cheers,

              d. - checkerhead

                  should be doing homework

We also did a benifit show with Ash Circle in Ottawa and some other collection stuff also. I know for sure Pane' (sorry I'm sure I butchered the name) threw some money that way. I was waiting for Ash Circle to post becasue they know better the end result of the fest. (we had to leave early). I think Ash Circle has been busy and without any kind of acces to modern technology, or conventional ways to light a smoke.
Julio, Jim threw you a "Shout Out" as we say, earlier in the thread. Tell Will and Cuba to help you bring it down to a 3. See you soon.

                      It's all good!

Lest there be any confusion, I appreciate the efforts of everyone who's been involved in raising cash for the P.Net fund... In one way or another we all benefit from this resource so any and all contributions (time, energy, money) have been great!

Thank you Thank you Thank you!
