    New websites

    Hey Guys and Gals,

I just wanted to post some recent sites I have designed. These are all sites for personal friends and performers. Some of them are not fully functional.

http://www.jamesbustar.com is my website but its not the best at the moment.

Anyways hope you enjoy the above websites.

I understand your point of view, but performers.net isnt about selling is it? I am only young so all the experience I can get is good experience.

Thanks for your somments though, I didnt think I was good enough to sell my sites!

            Cheers

Hey there. I totally understand that feeling of not feeling like you're pro enough to sell something... but for your own mental health, I also agree with Fisb.
I know from experience, having been things like a "college intern", working for free, or offering artwork to people before I felt I had enough credentials to make money at it, that it's hard to suddenly convince someone to pay you (when you start feeling like you're worth it) when they've been getting it for free all this time.
I remember as an intern, it was easier for the company to just move on to the next eager up-and-commer who was willing to work for a pat on the back.
              "Why buy the cow..."

For something like this, it might be better to start dirt cheep (like, so cheep it's practically free, and then work you way up to "changing your rates".

I've ended up feeling pretty resentful over give-aways after a while. Which sucks, because it was often for friends and it used to be something I enjoyed. ...but people start to expect it of you very quickly.

I can recall many instances (because of having made this business mistake at exactly your age) of practical strangers acting insulted because I couldn't just give them stuff. My time was valuable to me. ...and it wasn't just things like a little sketch, it was stuff like hand-sewn toys and portraits and logos. It got rediculous.

When you start out this way, it's easy for the whole thing to get slowly twisted around by a [possibly well meaning] individual who thinks they're giving you a foot-in-the-door or your "big break" to make you end up feeling like you owe THEM, for the opportunity.

I ended up doing a lot of free work out of guilt (Because I did it for free for that last guy... etc.)

You could always privately tell an individual, "pssst! For you, I'll do this one for free!", work up your portfolio that way, but the general public wouldn't expect the freebies. Instead it can be a nice surprise for each individual, which might get them to come back next time... but not expecting that you'll always give things away. It was just one special treat.)

That's my little burp, from what experience I've had.

              Later.

              Ratchet-Face Peters.
Well, maybe I WILL just keep telling myself that.

heh... yeah, I suppose after your original post, we all already know that you'd do it for free.

                  ...so advice for future advertisement.
Well, maybe I WILL just keep telling myself that.

Yer, I learn from my mistakes!

I just thought it was a good idea to get a portfolio up and running.

Now I have heard such good comments from many here and elsewhere on my work though, my self confidence has gone up! something I am very bad at controlling!

                    So cheers to everyone!

                    Ciao

if it helps, I didn't mean "wow" in a positive way.

your work inspires a profound desire to hit the "close" button in a rapid and violent fashion.

Why do you guys have to be such wieners sometimes?

(I added the "sometimes" for Eric's sake)

And Scot -- It's generally difficult to read sarcasm unless someone already knows what a jerk you act like.
Well, maybe I WILL just keep telling myself that.

The pseudo-sympathetic head pattings reminiscent of the parent of a special olympics athlete don't do anyone any good. Buster's work is garish, juvenile, poorly planned, lazily executed, and aurally obnoxious. Every one of those sites I closed within seconds, and most of them made me shed more tears than a televised American Indian watching an actor litter. They should only be included in a portfolio as "before" pieces, in order to say "look how bad I used to be." I don't see how this support group mentality is going to assist him in either doing better work, or realizing that design isn't his bag.

Being a jerk is twisting the truth, either to the positive or the negative. My statement is entirely true. if it had been good, I would have said so. It wasn't, it made me want to drive my fist through the screen of my laptop.

                            I stand by my statement.

One can state the truth in different ways -- constructively or non.
You can make your point clear without tearing someone up.
In fact, you go out of your way to do the "tearing up". It requires more words than constructive criticism would have.
He knows he's completely new at this. He's probably 10 years younger than you. I didn't see a need for the meanness.
He's likely not injured, and I'm not either. I'm just saying -- I don't see the point.
That said, Eric, I hope that you still want to build MY website for me.
You're very good at this, and I think if you wanted to, you could think of many ways in which to guide a kid to get better at something he enjoys. It would probably take just as much effort as trying to think of insults, and it would do far more good.

I'm starting to sound preachy now, so I'll stop talking on this thread. I'm sure, in time, I'll end up saying something wiener-like too.
