Evel Knievel was the first person I ever wanted to be. Not a fireman, not a doctor, not an astronaut... I wanted to be a daredevil.

I was probably 8 or 9 years old and all I had was a crappy little bike, but I'd put on knee pads and a football helmet and set up little ramps in the driveway to jump off of. And when the cute girl next door would ride by on her bike, I'd go off my ramp and puropsely ditch into the dirt to try to create a spectacular wipepout. Wiping out in a cloud of dust was the coolest thing in the world.

I know he probably wasn't the best person in the world and definitely wasn't a great role model, but Evel Knievel was the first person I ever saw on TV that really inspired me to go outside and DO something.

I really wish Snake River Canyon had been succesful. That was kind of embarrasing.

Jim,thanks for your post. I would like to think Evil influenced a majority of us in one way or another.I as a entertainer ain't that good, even though I've spent my entire life entertaining. I mean he amused all of us. One hell of a guy .Think about it!

Good to know that even Evel could cheat death for a time. According to the caption on his photo, he was 77 at the time he turned 69. Can't beat that for a good time. Ed.
