    Tears of a Clown

Has anyone ever done studies or read about why melancholy/depression seems to go so hand-in-hand with comedy and performance?

Maybe it's a natural survival mechanism and defense for suffering.

    Any thoughts?
I have plenty, but ne'er the time right now.
Well, maybe I WILL just keep telling myself that.

One reason may be that the basis of comedy is pain. We don't laugh at a beautiful women in pretty clothes. . .until she falls in the mud.
