    Gallagher

An AP news item today says that the comedian Gallagher is being sued, and he accused of shoving, slapping and swearing at people in the audience.

Has anyone ever seen Gallagher? I saw him once on television, and that was enough. His show was dumb, prop-heavy, and just not funny. Smashing watermelons gets old really fast.

Smash away you prince among prop comics

Gallagher was a one hit wonder in the comedy world. He’s still trying to ride the wave, which is now just a ripple. Another interesting Gallagher law suit was about 10 or 15 years ago when he sued his own brother who had copied his act without permission and was traveling around the country performing as “Gallagher” which was after all his last name too. The real unfunny Gallagher won and forced his unfunny brother Gallagher to stop performing his show. It was after all his watermelon smashing talent that his brother was trying to gravy train off of. From what I hear his brother really wasn’t nearly as adept at smashing watermelons as Gallagher. I guess every kid in the Gallagher family can’t be a prop smashing genius. This story was related to me by the owner of a comedy club where the brother Gallagher had performed so it’s just word of mouth. As for the new lawsuit, I think anyone who pays to see Gallagher deserves any abuse they get.

...we were showcasing at a NACA booking conference one time (many years ago), and as we entered the exhibit hall we saw, who we thought was Gallagher, riding around on his giant bigwheel. Looked like Gallagher, sounded like Gallagher, and yes, even did the same act as as Gallagher. This guy even promoted himself as Gallagher. In very small print, at the bottom of his poster and promo, in parenthesis, it said "Not the Real Gallagher you've seen on TV". It was his brother. Upon talking with him we learned that his brother (the real Gallagher) had supposedly given his blessing for him to perform the act (like we needed two people out there smashing melons and not being funny). I heard that at some point he asked him to stop doing the act and the brother never stopped, so he sued. Never heard the final outcome...

PS: on a side note... it was just a couple of years later that a young new prop comic showcased at the NACA southeast conference and set an unprecendented record of booking every school at the conference (around 175 colleges). His name was Scott Thompson aka Carrot Top. He was often, in his early days, referred to as "a poor man's Gallagher". While I personally never found him to be very funny either (which I hate to admit, as one of my good friends is his main joke/gag writer), he has gone on to a lot more fame and notoriety than Gallagher ever did.
