    what is humour?

what is humour?...charlie chaplin asked this and then answered.

"it is a kind of gentle and benevolent custodian of the mind which prevents us from being overwhelmed by the apparent seriuosness of life"

any other thoughts on what humour is?

Humour is the juxtaposition of two contrary sets of rules.

this explanation works very well if the example is hilarious.

no offence taken sean, but thats called talent...i rely on my ability to gather and keep my audience not chainshaws or things stuck on top of poles ...the humorous part is the original material that goes on as part of the performance. nothing against poles, chanishaws and microphones. i just prefer not to use them. its also why i can carry my kit in a small day pack. do yourself a favour try it some time. i bet that would truly be humorous.....just joking bikey boy.

Humour is the juxtaposition of two conflicting rules in ones perception and the relief therein when the mind manages to sort out the priorities and correct itself without getting angry.

Someone wanna back up the pedophile theory about Charlie Chaplin? I'm not a great expert on Chaplin, but I honestly have not heard this one before. Do tell.

Chaplin's secnd wife Lillita Grey, was 12 when they met on the set of "The Kid" - she plays the role of "the flirtatious angel." Chaplin was 32. They married when she was 14 (and he was 34) - but told the press she was 16.

The title character of Vladimir Nabokov's book Lolita, is inspired by her, and there are several references to Chaplin throughout the book, some veilled, some not so veilled. Such as Humbert describing himself as having "movie-star good looks."

I did read Lolita many years ago. Humbert was a very disturbing character. I thought Jeremy Irons did a good job in the movie.

I did not know about Chaplins 2nd wife. That is scary. I should read Nabakovs book again but I don't think I could stomach it.

Ettiene.. You may want to revise your post.

According to the three websites I've looked at Chaplin met lillita when she was 12 in The Kid but didn't meet her again until Four Years later.

He did begin an affair with her though it isn't clear whether this was before or after her 16th birthday.

He got her pregnant and they got married very unhappily by most accounts...

                      16 is young though.

                          Hey Jester,

I'll check my facts, but I'm pretty certain on this one. I read Chaplin's autobiography 7 years ago, and it did not gel with accounts I read about him in the biographies of Mack Sennet, Mabel Normand, or histories of the silent era. So I read two more biographies on him, and came closer to the truth.

Chaplin wrote his autobiography to "set the story straight" about a great many things. Whether it was womanizing, communism or just his "unparrallelled genius," Charlie wanted to make sure his version of events were what was remembered. And for the most part he succeeded.

When I get a chance I'll dig up my sources, it's just a busy week for gigs right now.

                            Lord Boothby:
"Humor is the only solvent of terror and tension."

                            Lord Buckley:
"It is the duty of the humor of any given nation in times of high crisis to attack the catastrophe that faces it in such a manner as to cause the people to laugh at it in such a manner that they do not die before they get killed."
