Read that link as a refresher...
This happened with abrand new Imac G5...I in the past have been very happy with mac, but this situation has left me a bit stung and am not so comfortable with their system right now...am stupid paranoid and burning a disc every time I create a single file....

I have gotten it back and it is running...but it is running slwer than when It had to be serviced....all programs are running off a bit....

      Greg,

      That sucks, man.

All of my final cut projects are on external hard drives (I have 3 for mac & 1 for PC). I back up my data every month on external HDs and every 2-3 months on DVDs.

I have no problem with PCs and will continue to use my PC for many projects. I just bought the mac because I do all my video projects on the mac edit suites at a TV studio & just couldn't stand not having my own any longer.

Here is what you have to realize. Computers are still computers no matter what. All consumer computers are only built to last three years reliabley because the technology in them will be out of date by then anyway. Macs usually last longer than other brands because they have thicker circuit boards. Mac has had major problems with several models... like the G4 cube. You can't guarontee that any computer is going to be totally reliable, that's why they sell the extended warrentys rather than give them away. Any apple reseller will recomend the warrenty, and they don't really make any money off of them.
All cell phones are junk. All computers are junk. All cars are junk. Some brands are a lot better than others. Buy the warrenty.
A friend of mine has a dell that's about three months old, and the hard drive froze. she lost a big paper she was working on and can't get any of the information back. She had the warrenty, but when she called tech support she had to talk to some asshole in india rather than california. This happend last week.
I love my powerbook, but I can't stand the fact that the metal body shields wifi signals and I can't get decent reception while my girlfriend has amazing reception.
it's a tough life, good luck.

              tip:
if you're working on a final cut pro project, use the internal hd. it will be faster.

She had the warrenty, but when she called tech support she had to talk to some _______ in india rather than california

              are you serious Evon?

also, besides making geographicist statements, weren't you trying to make a point about how warranties are gud?

okay, sorry. I'm a little bit bitter about offshoring. I called dell and I couldn't understand the dude. The second time I called I couldn't understand the lady. And both times they kept asking me if I was planing on exporting stuff out of the US.... like five times! I understand that it must be difficult deal with confused americans when english is your second language, but it was not a quality experience. And I had to talk to the people because my girlfriend was about to throw the phone out the window from frustration (it's her computer).
Mac is much better for that. the first time I called it was some guy with a canadian accent and the second time it was some chick with a california accent. Both companies will fix your problem eventually. Both have products that are constantly evolving and changing. Dell and mac seem to be the two computer companies who have the strongest customer support.

my real point is that you really can't expect computers to be consistantly amazing. They are changing too fast.

Scot: thanks for the final cut tip.

                  Evan: Jesus, lighten up!

WE KNOW about planned obsolesense and that everything is crap. By the way, obsolesense applies to YOU to and it will not be long before you begin to notice the effects of aging. Your metabolism and reflexes will slow, your skin and muscle tone will diminish, your hairline will recede, and your motivation and ambition will lessen. The pessimism and negativity don't usually take hold until after 40+ years of a failed life, but it looks like here you're WAY ahead of the game.

                  Mr Qwirk,

Part of the reason I kept holding out was because of everything I've been hearing about the new technologies right around the corner (Blue Ray / DVD HD for example) and Apple has been leaking about the release of a G5 laptop for the last 6 months.

I do all my editing on Final Cut Studio Pro (HD) and am working on several different non-street performing related film projects. I work with a community TV station and have been using their edit suites and in exchange I've been teaching HTML, dreamweaver & photoshop.

However, I've just gotten a bit sick of dealing with all the restrictions (open lab mon-wed 3-6, but all the macs are G4s that have been over used and crash; there is only one mac with a miniDV deck and 80% of the time someone who is (literally, i kid you not) learning how to email is using it; rules change on a minute by minute basis depending on the mood of whoever is in charge.

So the other day, they tried to over charge me $15 for some DVD duplication and I just said "that's it, I can't stand this" and drove down to the apple store and spent $4000. That will teach those bastards!!!

My G5 will be delivered in about 5 days and I just can't wait to start playing!

                    For the dell owners...

Slightly off-topic, but on the subject of Dell tech support, I'm an expert.

The Indian guys are outsourced for so !?@#ing cheap, and all they do is read the Windows troubleshooter to you, if that doesn't solve your problem (which it won't, because by the time you've called them you've already run the troubleshooter 5 times) they say in a very grave voice "You must now reformat your harddrive."

No exagerration, no generalization. EVERY. !@#ING. TIME.

The trick is to keep calling back until you get an American voice. I've learned this through weeks of calling Dell, conviced that there was a better solution than reformatting my hard drive. Dell does have real tech support, they are just grossly outnumbered by the outsourced Indian guys. I went through all of this for weeks, and the minute I got an American on the phone my computer was fixed in less thatn 5 minutes. I brought up the situation to the guy on the phone, and he was actually the one that told me, straight up "I know it sucks, but just keep calling until you get an American."

"You must now reformat your harddrive."

It's not just Dell. My laptop is an HP that I bought two years ago when HP bought out compaq and decided they were going to dominate the desktop / laptop market. They artificially lowered their prices to try and crush the competition (specifically Dell) but they just went broke instead.

I bought my laptop at Best Buy and it had many problems straight out of the box. I did buy the extended warrenty. The wireless card didn't work so I took it to the service department and they told me that "the computer must have a virus and you need to reformat the harddrive."

The touchpad & keyboard were sketchy so I took it back to the service department and they said, that "Windows must be corrupt, so you'll have to reformat the harddrive."

The battery wasnt recharging - because the power supply was burned out, but they said that the hard drive needed to be reformatted.

                      -------------
Each time I insisted they send the laptop back to HP and everytime they fix the HARDWARE problem. In two years they have replaced nearly everything EXCEPT the hard drive.

some Freeware to keep your new mac happy

A couple of maintenance apps, good to run ONYX once a week, to run your CRON jobs, clear your caches, etc....

and Applejack, another good maintenance app to use if you have more serious problems....

and for DV file conversion, check out Streamclip....

                        enjoy your g5!!!
