Speaking as someone who has spent some CONSIDERABLE time in France, I would like to annoy Ettienne by talking bollocks about French Culture.

The French are stroppy. Bad tempered, arrogant and angry. They hate the English, the Germans, the Spanish, the Italians, The Swiss, The Begians, The Luxemburgs and every now and then, this manifests itself by blockading roads, burning livestock in front of incoming tourists.

What is happening at the moment is business as usual, except for once, they aren't blaming the English Farmers.

Oh yeah! Thanks for reminding me. Revolution. The French are extremely proud of their revolutions.

The extremely intelligent (but easily flattered into agreement on anything) readers of Global Guerillas will no doubt be clenching their fists in triumph as the establishment gets a kick up the arse and the bourgois (the evil normal people who just try and get on with their lives and pay their mortgages) non criminal classes are having their cars wrecked.

I blame the Kaiser Cheifs. Their song "I predict a riot" must take some of the blame.

cant believe im wading into this one

from the way I understand it......

The french have long been champions of social injustice, just have a look at the positions the government there has taken on immigration over the years. Its some kind of liberty, equality, fraternity thing. They have accepted thousands of immigrants from their African colonies, giving them housing and social welfare. But unfortunately that is where love stops. Whilst happily accepting immigrants into the country it has become quite another thing for the French to let them into the economy. So what you have is thousands and thousands of youth (Frenchborn) , muslim mainly who cannot, despite an abundance of qualifications, get a job in an country that whilst seeming to be extremely liberal is in fact full of racist bigots. Its quite a pickle.
In saying that, some of my best mates are French, I visit them often.
I think its says alot about the social policies of the French that these people can riot for 9 days before the government actually makes a decision to do something about it.
In France you have rights.....except the right to a fair chance if your an immigrant child.
