It is this time of the year - jazz fest. The last big gig of the season. Lots of people, music, magic, and strange coincidences... i was walking on friday to the bus on Rampart - and bumped into Priestess Miriam, and I know the Temple, because they have Chicken Man ashes their, and his altar, and IMHO he's the Guardian angel of New orleans street performers. i met the man in 1995 when i first came to town - he was giving blessengs and offering all kinds of mojo-stuff for tips on Bourbon. i never knew he was a serious voodoo practicioner - for me he was the ultimate husstler, the street legend, Big Daddy, somebody you ask for advice or place to live...Every time I came back for mardi gras - I'll give him a hug and take a picture with him...Anyway, he was I big voodoo doctor after all - you can get more info on the Net.
Soo, I walked into the Temple and asked Priestess Miriam, what did he liked? Because I am going on the road and want to honour his memory and bring something to his alter. And she laughed and said - Chicken Man liked pretty ladies, and vine, and chicken legs!! Pretty ladies? No problem! Widespread Panic is playing - lots of pretty hippy-chicks their! So I painted them in the name of Chicken Man and told his story, and was writing "Chicken man Day 05" on them... And they all jumped "Chicken Man Rules" Chicken Man lives", it was fun. I'll bring him some Stoly on monday.
Anyway, I think we need to have Chicken Man Buskers Festival in New Orleans - just close Dumaine from Jackson Square to Congo square weekend after Halloween and have this 'free enterprise zone" - give free spaces to street performers and psychics, and have all kinds of chicken-food, like the biggest chicken cookout in the world, with all kinds of international recipies, and have Voodoo rituals on Congo Square and all kinds of music.
Because the weather is so great in November, but it's nothing to do after Halloween - we need to have some big festival here for the beginning of the season.
If you met Chicken Man and have a stroty to tell - Please do so! I also want to have big exhibition "My picture with Chicken Man" - tonns of people took pictures with him, he was so much a local character...
I am spreading the idea, hoping to find several people who can actually manifest it, i am pretty sure the city will love it, as they survive on tourism. And buskers festivals are cheap to organize - just let us work for tips, we'll come!
Bless yall. Irina, New Orleans
