Just saw this in a magazine today: to unclog a stuffed up nose, press your thumb or finger into the little pit at the top of your nose where it meets your brow, right next to your eye. Hold it for two minutes, then release.

On the subject of dairy, there was a study done that claimed there is no correlation between drinking milk and mucus production. There are a couple caveats: the study was funded by the Australian Dairy Research Council and some question the test methods. Here's a reference to it--Milk and Mucus.

A possibly more moderate conclusion comes from Dr. William Sears, a Harvard-trained pediatrician:
Is the warning not to drink milk when you have a cold an old doctor's tale? Yes and no. Some people do make more mucus when they drink milk, and any high-fat food may produce a sensation of thicker secretions in the back of the throat. Yet, the mucus-producers are probably those that are allergic to milk. Separating out milk-allergic persons, research fails to show any correlation between drinking milk and mucus production during a cold. In conclusion, you need extra fluids during a cold, anyway, so if you're not allergic it's okay to drink a few glasses of lowfat milk.
Everyone seems to agree that drinking lots of water is supposed to help by thinning the mucus.

    Hope you feel better soon.

P.S. - you said you on the Martin Kicks Arse thread that you were verbose--clearly I'm trying to give you a run for your money

      VERBOSE

eh... well... you know. everyone has their moments.

i think i get a lot quieter the worse i feel.

      and, i feel cruddy.

i would hate to think i'm allergic to milk - i really like milk in most forms... cheese, in my coffee, chocolate milk, chocolate... milk is my friend.

thanks for the advice & well wishes, stephon.

The thing Stephon Mentioned is a pressure point for your sinuses, but there is a better one, it's a tiny bit above where your nostrils connect to the rest of your face. If you can find it (come on, you're half-hippie, you should know how to find a pressure point) put your index fingers on it(well , "them" actually) and press straight back (into your head) for about 15 seconds. Not only does it work wonders for sinus problems, but it usually keeps people on the bus from talking to you too.

          PRESSURE POINTS

my flat-mate (the acupuncturist) applied both of these points last night... along with needling the top of my head, behind my ears, along my breast bone and on either side of my nose...

i have never had my sinuses drain so quickly and so much.

it was like a waterfall of snot. pretty gross.

at one point this almost made me ill - as louisa (flat-mate) warned me to close the back of my throat (using a glottal stop - singers trick, closing the soft palette with the back of the tongue.) otherwise the snot would drain down my throat and make me puke... it almost did. which is harder to do than you think - closing up the back of the throat for 20 or so minutes...

lots of gasping for breath in moments when the tide of snot would ebb...

          it was very intense.

thankfully, i now feel much better.
