art is resonance
Between art being definitively useless and the art of the dick joke its apparent that the art concept is a slippery elastic wee critter indeed.
Art being useless strikes me as a bit of a deliberately contentious position to take. The word useless is loaded. Art has a function else it would not exist. Whatever function it may have is its use.
What's practical or not is subjectively determined by an individuals needs. Drawing interesting lines in the sand i.e. useful= non art is a parlor game.
Art itself is a parlor game, (a disposable income is an advantage,)
Creating laughter is a science, an art, an abstract game, a living, a vocation, a means to an end.
Its not particularily difficult, keeping yourself interested is the hard part. But as we all know, having some old woman drop to one knee weeping with laughter as her mascara runs down her face. Thats art. (Unless it was a dick joke or she's senile-my rules)
I have a quote I use in my promo.
"I couldn't tell you if it was art, but I Can tell you there is an art to it."
My opinion is that art and performance share the faculty wherein there worth exists as a construct within peoples heads, the performance or art simply contains triggers.
Laughter's the best trigger I've ever met. Unless its a dick joke or your senile...or maybe an evil villain...or I don't like you..or your laughing AT me...or maybe I should think about this some more.
