    pick a team

    I'm having a moral crisis.
Since moving here for the foodplay contract, I couldn't help but to fall in love with the RedSox. The people of Boston and the surrounding areas (like the entire state and most of the states north of Mass) Love the Sox like a family member. They are passionet about them. Even if you arn't a sports fan and think baseball is a boring game to watch, a RedSox postseason game is a must see event that MUST be cared about. At the foodplay shows in the elementary schools I tag the end of the show with a "GO REDSOX"; which results in a thunderous applause from the kids and teachers alike. I have to say that the redsox have revived the baseball fan in me. The games against the yankees have stressed me out more than anything and kept me up for an entire week on the edje of my seat.
And now the redsox are in the world series for the first time since 1986, and they havn't won a world series since 1918, and they are facing the St. Louis Cardnals. I'm from Missouri, St. Louis is my home team. I don't know who to support.
on one hand I want the Sox to win because the fans out here really do deserve it, and it seems like hte kind of event that might solve all the problems in the world. That, and the party afterwards will be the best party ever! EVER!!!
on the other hand i kind of want to rub it in the face of all these up tight self rightious New England pricks who don't even know what Missouri is. I don't know how many people have said "Missouri, huh, I've never considered Missouri before". My girlfriend still isn't convinced that Missouri is even a state. As far as she's concernd it might be a provence in China.
"Missouri is the home of Mark Twain, Scot Joplin, Harry Truman, Jesse James, The Pony Express, Budwiser Beer, and John Ashcroft!!! we arn't too proud of john ashcroft, but whatever."
Budwiser is the only thing anybody relates to, and it's not enough.

so I don't know. who should I support?

I like the sox, and I hope it takes seven games. I lwas for the Yanks until they made overspending their main strategy. Last night's game was close enough to point to a decent series. The Cards are no cakewalk.

While I'm dreaming, I'll pick Kerry to win in a close race.

I be in a Province North of Mass!!. Ive been to games at Fenway as a young boy. So, Go BoSox!!!! Man, they got to break the curse. Its just not right for them to be awesome every year, to only have em get their heads clipped in the playoffs. I think Beentown might be getting a early Christmas present this year. Hopefully!!

        to dream the impossible dream

I think it'll be the Red Sox in 4.

Kerry will win the electoral vote but Bush wins the popular vote. (that'd be sweet)

and Evan should shoot himself in the eye with a salt deicer while eating 50 eggs.

        currently fighting the unbeatable foe,
        Robert

          Evan,

I was born here in the Boston area so my fate has been sealed.

I can understand your thoughts about your home state as it is a beautiful part of the country and as American as apple pie and Budweiser.

But, this year the Red Sox are the epitome of what most Americans see as the ideal. For almost 100 years they have failed but they come back every season. When they fail they do it in the most spectacular fashion. They don't lie down and they never let anyone walk away with it. These boys will play beaten, bloody, and still give it their last best moment of the day, no matter what the odds, or what the talking heads on the news say. They will play ball, always. Not because it is what they do, but because it is what they are.

There are a lot of ball clubs out there who are dedicated, hard working clubs. But no one knows more heartache and sorrow than the sox.

When the Yankees lost Tory came on the TV and he was most magnanimous and humble. He can afford to be, his ball club has the biggest dynasty since Ming. When the Yankees win yet another series no one in this country gives a shit other than the Yankee fans. It is expected. Money has bought them the players they've needed since the 1940's.

But what about Boston? We play in that crappy little ball park that we wouldn't trade for anything in the world. Our players are usually a collection of wild cards, hasbeens, wannabees, and neverwases. But when they get together and band up something spectacular happens. They develop that steely eyed resolve that is usually obtained only by crossing great oceans or fighting bloody battles.

When Buckner hobbled past that easy grounder in 1986 I forgave him immediately. He was hurt, tired, and beaten bloody. He had no right being on that field. But, he was doing exactly what he had programed himself to do. He played hurt, he did his best, and it just came up short. Fuck it. In my book the guy deserved better.

Last night Schilling pitched six innings of professional baseball against one of the best teams in the country. He did it with his ankle blown to shit and blood dripping down his leg.

That is why you should root for the Red Sox. For almost 100 years they have played it as hard as they could, and at times lost when they should have won. That would break the hearts and the spirits of a lot of ball clubs and their fans.

But the Red Sox keep coming back. That is why you fell in love with them. They don't quit, no matter what. And WHEN they win that series it will be the sweetest victory in baseball history. I say for this year Evan, be a part of it.

And to make it up to you, I promise from now on every fan in Boston will stand behind the Cards ANYTIME they play against the Yankees!

          Best,

          Dan-
