spike ,don't call peter an ignorant slut whilst you are submiting inacuracies, the sex pistols were formed in 75, the clash and the damned supported the sex pistols in 76, the ramones were formed in 74 ,so the story goes the ramones are credited with starting punk, fair play , they were influencial , and it was an american journalist writing for rolling-stone that first coined the term.

However, I don't think we can safely say that america gave us punk, like we can say spain gave us flamenco or jamaica gave us reggae. We can't say that america gave us the phone can we?it was actually an italian ,Meucci , although Bell (a scot who MARRIED an American ( not became one)is historically credited with the invention because Meucci was skint and sold it to him, we can say that the telephone was registered in a US patent office , but that's not quite as difficult as inventing a revolutionary communications device that will change the world is it?
And for those of you that still think Edison invented the light bulb , you are wrong , sorry , Heinrich Gobel (german who emigrated to NY) built working ones 3 decades earlier than edison patented one.so we can't safely say that america gave us the phone or light bulb,
We can, however, safely say that america gave us nuclear weapons, oppenheimer(a jewish american) directed the manhattan project, and Enrico Fermi (italian american) developed the first controlled fission reaction. lucky we had a dane (Bohr) and a german (einstein)in the world to form the international atomic energy wotsit, i digress.........
