    Survival of the fittest

Ever since reading "Gaia" by the multi-disciplinary scientist whose name escapes me right now, I've been convinced that the Earth itself is the largest single living thing in our part of the universe. One of the prime directives of any living being is survival. If we humans feel threatened by wolves we tend to kill all wolves. If the living earth is threatened by we puny vermin humankind, the Earth will find a way of removing us as a hinderance to Her survival.

Global warming may be Her best defense -- let the humans pour all kinds of polutants into Her air, Her land, Her water. Those poisons will eventually wipe out humanity and she can start over. And perhaps do it right the next time.

      Warm schmarm

As I sit looking out at the four-foot tall snowbanks on the other side of my window, I tend to thumbs down the idea of global warming being our species' downfall. Nope. Too many other things are affected and thrown out of balance - melting polar ice caps and desalinization, dying coral reefs, desertification - for this to be Mother Nature's pest control.

Nah, I think Mama's got a better idea.

Mad Cow - beef is out, check
Asian bird flu - poultry is out, check
Mercury poisoning - tuna and lakefish are out, check
PCBs and dioxin - salmon is out, check

Panicky peoples are taking refuge in all the prepackaged transfatty goodness they can get their hands on, dooming the population to descent into a blubber-filled future of busticated aortas.

Things is looking very good for vegetabletarians right now...

Its extensive with lots of links but the thread itself has some interesting speculative angles.

especially 'lurkingfear's comment about building fortresses, its a wee ways down the page.
