Know of Any good Circus Schools????

Been toying with the idea of going to a circus school. I have done a few searches and feel rather overwhelmed so I thought I'd ask the professionals.

What I"m looking for in terms of a school??? Want to learn clowning, physical comedy, perhaps a little floor acrobatics and how to put together a proper street show.

I am a fire dancer by trade so I would like to incorporate that into the mix somehow. Also use a Rola Bola and can barely juggle.

It doesn't matter where it is in the world. I'm open to travelling to new places. I'm Canadian living in the states for the moment and am ready for a change of scenery.

Have heard of CircoArts Program in Christchurch New Zealand which looks pretty good. Also heard of something in Blue Lake California, Dell Arte (?) I think is what it's called??

I'm looking for some reccomendations of any kind! Very appreciative.

My information is getting out of date, but I had fun at circoarts. I can't comment on their comedy or physical theatre components.
Last I heard there was no real juggling component, they are pretty big on arials and acrobatics.
They won't teach fire (OSH regulations) and won't really be of much help for Street material. However there is a regular pitch in Chch that's great for learning (the hard way) and the locals are all pretty freindly.
If you are keen I can probably put you in touch with some people with more recent experience of the school.

CircoArts situation has changed slightly with the departure of head acrobatics/aerials coach Alex Schukin.

Also this year the juggling component was at a higher level with actual regular classes

Clown/Comedy and character is still the same as ever. At least until I apply for the job... Mwahaha

For Circo: Live cheap in Christchurch, full time course, big facility, structured learning environment, Dan Tastik drops in occassionaly. They will take most anyone unless you have something Really really obviously dangerously wrong with you.

Against: Internationals get double the fees of locals (although it's in pitiful NZ dollars) weirdly beurocratic at times, only one aspect of clowning really taught, lack of tutor time.

Amanda Maclean, a clown in Wellington has done both CircoArts and Delarte which would put her in a good position to compare and contrast. Do you want her email?

The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) is based at Swinburn College in Melbourne Australia ( see http://www.nica.swin.edu.au/ ) has been established for 3 years now and by all reports it's a great course.

I suggest going to Baltimore next week and attending Motionfest.
It is a cheap way of sampling all the instructors and seeing what best suits your needs.

With all the students and teachers available I can't imagine you not finding out the answer to just about any question re: the variety arts.

Plus ... It's so much fun.

NICA is a goody too but difficult to get into if you're not of the extremely acrobatic persuasion.

Thanks all for responding to my post. I am ever so appreciative of the input. I find that personal feedback is better than the stuff they offer on websites. I welcome more!

Go to Dell'arte for the clowning and physical theater. Ronlin Foreman is one of the Best clown teachers in the world. The school mostly works on all forms of physical theater, from Mask work to Decroux movement. The students come from all the world too, it opens you up to a very large community.

In Canada go see Sue Morrison for more Clown work. She is amazing. (Toronto) www.canadianclowning.com

I haven't heard of any street performing school yet, except motionfest.

if you go to england circomedia is ok, i went there. circus space seems to produce beter results, but it's much more $ and a lot more work, and harder to get in to
