UNFAIR TREATMENT/STERIO TIPES

HEY EVERYONE MY NAME IS JULIO I'M THE GUY WHO STARTED THE
GROUP CALLED THE USA BREAK DANCERS.
I STARTED THIS GROUP IN 1986, THE MEMBERS I HAVE IN THE GROUP NOW ARE NOT THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS BUT JUST AS GOOD MAYBE EVEN BETTER.
SINCE I PUT THE NEW GROUP TOGETHER WE BEEN TRYING TO WORK AT ALOT OF THE HOT PITCHES IN THE STATES ONE OF THEM WE AUDITONED FOR WAS FANUIL HALL IN BOSTON AN AUDITON THAT WE ALMOST DIDN'T EVEN GET A CHANCE TO DO.
I CALLED FOR ALMOST THREE MONTHS EVERY WEEK TO GET A REGISTRATION TO AUDITION AND NEVER GOT AN ANSWER FINALLY I MET A KOOL STREET PERFORMER WHO WORKED FANUIL HALL. I WON'T MENTION HIS NAME FOR HIS PROTECTION. BUT IF IT WASN'T FOR HIM TO SEND ME A COPY OF HIS BLANK REGISTRATION SHEET WE WOULD HAVE NEVER GOTTEN A CHANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
AFTER SENDING THE REGISTRATION SHEET AND OUR PROMO PACKAGE WE WERE GRANTED AN AUDITION.
ON THE DAY OF THE AUDITION WE WERE THE SECOND OR THIRD TO LAST ACT TO GO UP AND HALF THE PLACE WAS EMPTY WHEN WE FINISHED THAT PLACE WAS PACKED AND THE AUDIENCE WAS THREE TIMES THE SIZE IT ORIGINALY WAS IN THE BEGINNING OF THE DAY. WE HAD THE BIGGEST REACTION OUT OF ANY OTHER ACT THAT WAS THERE AND MIND YOU IT WASN'T JUST A GROUP OF BREAKDANCERS PLAYING LOUD MUSIC AND DOING TRICKS WE DID A CERTIFIED STREET PERFORMANCE AS MUCH AS WE CAN DO FOR THE LITTLE TIME YOU HAVE TO AUDITION AND WE WERE DENIED WE WERE NOT ACCEPTED TO THE PROGRAM WITH NO EXPLENATION I CALLED THE MARKETING DIRECTOR AND LEFT MESSAGES SEVERAL TIMES I NEVER GOT A CALL BACK FROM HER TIL THIS DAY . WHILE I WAS IN HALIFAX I WAS TOLD BY ONE OF THE JUDGES WHO IS ANNOTHER STREET PERFORMER THAT OUR SCORE SHEET HAD NOTHING BUT TENS ACROSS THE BOARD HE THOUGHT WE WERE IN FOR SHORE, WOULDN'T YOU THAT WASN'T THE CASE TO THE POWERS THAT BE. ANY WAY I JUST THINK THAT WAS A CASE OF UNFAIRNESS BECAUSE OF WHAT WE DO AND WHO WE ARE IF IT'S NOT JUST THAT IT IS PART OF IT FOR SHORE. IF ANYONE HAD EVER WORKED WITH US IN THE PASS THEY KNOW THAT THE USA BREAK DANCERS ARE SERIUOS STREET PERFORMERS AND RESPECT OTHER STREET PERFORMERS AS WELL MAY BE SOME OF YOU ENCOUNTERED OTHER BREAK DANCE GROUPS IN THE BEFORE AND THINK WE CONDUCT OURSELVES THE SAME WAY WELL YOUR WRONG. WE HAVE NEVER DIS REPECTED ANY ONE OR ANY WERE WE WORK. IF ANYONE THAT KNOWS US IS READING THIS OR ANYONE WHO HAS EVER BEEN TREATED UNFAIR LIKE THIS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SPEEK YOUR PEACE MAYBE YOU CAN SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS TOPIC.

Juilo,

The ALL CAPS thing is annoying to read. Turn off your Shift Lock.

Now about your post...

You guys rocked your audition.

I have worked with you several times and I know how hard you guys work and what a quality show you put on. I know you had high scores from the judges, but as many acts found out this year, the judges don't have all the say in who gets picked for Faneuil Hall. I can't speak for the management, but I highly doubt they had something against you because of who you are, your reputation, your quality, etc. You guys simply didn't get in because they were apparently cutting back the program this year. There were several veteran acts who were REMOVED from the program and only, I think, one new act.

The fact that they held auditions (with people coming from all over the place) and then didn't take new acts is crappy. I don't know what else to say. They treat the auditions as a publicity event for Faneuil Hall. After this year, it's pretty obvious to see. They used to at least take a FEW acts per year. But not this year.

I can say one thing... Bothering them with phone calls and loud (ALL CAPITALS) emails will only remind them who you are so they can NOT let you in again NEXT year.

If you want to play the game at Faneuil Hall, remember that it's corporate America and they like to be schmoozed and flattered and kissed up to, not yelled at and told that they treated you unfairly. You have to get insode their mind and make a positive impression both on stage and off.

Keep doing the show you guys do. You don't NEED Faneuil Hall. It would be a nice place for you to work when you're in town, but I know how you guys work. You have to keep moving and work all day. Remember that Faneuil is 2 hour shifts. And you don't get spots every day. It's hard to make a living with Faneuil alone these days. It's become more of a supplemental gig (for me at least.)

Your audition really did rock.

Jim

Well, here is the thing. It makes it really hard to read when it's in all caps. I'm dyslexic, so it's a struggle for me to read this forum anyway. When it's in all caps it just looks like a big block of random letters to me.
Thats' my perspective. It took me like ten min. to read your post of 30 lines; and yes, that pisses me off a little.

Julio,

I don't know how many forums you hang out in, but the general feeling on the web is that WRITING IN ALL CAPS IS THE EQUIVALENT OF YELLING. It's basically considered rude in forums. It's just sort of a web etiquette thing. I know you're not trying to be rude, it's just that the nerds that hang out in forums like this are sensitive. Thanks,
Jim

that's kool i could respect that, but i think it's still funny to me that writing my original topic in all caps is more talked about then the fact that me and my group were possibly discriminated.

So you didn't get cast for a part. Chances are it is not a reflection on you, your show or your ensemble. If they don't want you, then you most certainly don't need them. The site didn't want to bring you in for whatever reason, so you accept your pink-slip as a FOL (fact of life). I've never heard of anyone not getting hired even though they were the best candidate.

Maybe next time, try sleeping with the director.

your right me and my group are doing great with out them and we don't need to work on there property, in fact we believe there loosing out. i just wanted to bring this issue to the public so performers will know what kind of people they work for and to hear different views on the topic. so far yours is the best i heard yet.

Julio,

I know Faneuil Hall enough to say that you were not discriminated against because of your ethnicity. And it certainly wasn't because of your talent.

They just didn't want new acts this year. I think the only acts they accepted were musical (instrumental) acts. There were no new variety acts as far as I can remember.

All I was saying was, if you go after them and complain and raise other issues, they are surely going to remember you (in a bad way) next time. You don't have to kiss ass, but in situations like this, being gracious and positive (even if you don't mean it) will help you the next time a lot more than creating a ruckus will.

It's an audition. I've auditioned for 50 commercials and didn't get any of them. It is totally degrading to put all your effort into an audition, kill, and then be shown the door. But I don't get mad and blow up at the casting director because I want to leave her with a good impression. Because there's always the next time and that might be the one I get.

Don't worry too much about it. Keep doing what you do.

Jim

that's what i did i forgot about it and moved on then i found out about annother group like ours who were not even granted the chance to audition. every thing came back to me at that point i realized we also attempted to contact faneuil hall many times pryer to the audition and were never answered if we didn,t have an inside connection the same thing would have happened to us. i could only think of two reasons why that would happen one is partly your explanation and that is they had no intentions in hiring any extra acts in the first place and they new we would kick ass at the audition or the other is that they just don't want our type of act on there property. i mean think about it how many jugglers or acts that are in that same element are out there working in the main pitches? these are professional people why not have something different for a change something new and exciting and is still fun for the whole family?
