Sorry too, AJ, if I touched on something sensative.
I thought I was supporting your premise that "you do not have to need something to enjoy it".
I like quiche very much but also dislike stereotypical cliqhed bullshit.

FLASH! Interrupting the regularly scheduled discussion with this important announcement...

Peter, your slip is showing (again).

I have ignored your many slips until now -- but this one is so obvious it begs for (my) attention:

Real men don't need quiche either.*

(And for the record big guy, I knew who you 'were' before the new boards were operational. Even mentioned it to Jim in a private email eons ago. Could write volumes on your choice for an alter ego but you're hardly worth the effort.)

AND NOW, back to the thread in progress...

        Thank you, chance.
Your diligent detective work and dedication to the interests of our small company have alerted us to the dangers of tardy computer practices and we will be more careful in future.

Now, if you could just help me with my psychological problems.
Seems I've got this imaginary friend, see, but it's got out of control. I talk to her all the time and pretend she does all the work around here, I even send her off to Singapore for the tax deductions and frequent flyer points. You gotta help me, suerte, you are my only chance.

PS, You noticed my slip and I didn't think you cared.
It's my favourite, a lovely, calf-length, gunmetal blue-grey satin number that drives Bev crazy. "That little bit that shows" works better than porn or quiche, don't you think?

          quiche IS porn.

And occasionally, if you look hard at the screen, you will see a piece of quiche that has slipped quietly in there.

but only the real porn lovers know about that.

the greatest of them can tell what sort of quiche it is. Now thats pervy.

lets stop bickering and got on and have a good shag.

I class porn with video games, alcohol, gambling/the lottery, glue huffing and all the other escapes from $daily life# which is unfortunately, for most of us in Capitalist Canada
something to be escaped from thru any means, rather than something to be lived to the fullest.
Almost all of us slip into something or other at one time or another in a parasite economy like Canada's.

This is a theatrical play in progress. We are the actors. There are many different roles available, but unfortunately the script and storyline are crap, and the director sucks. There are homeless and billionaire characters, queens and undocumented immigrant nannies, church ladies and sex trade workers, drug dealers and HMO bosses. Are we to blame the less appealing, lower status characters in the play for the fact that this script and story suck?Or are we to blame the playwrite. The one who created the theme....the story...the roles. Anything shitty the actors may do within their constraints of the characters they have been assigned or chosen from the available roles....the ultimate responsibility lies with the writer, the director.

It's interesting to look at prostitution in the context of an escapist culture. You're right about one thing, and not just in Canada - we all will do just about anything to break free from ordinary life. This forum is full of people who have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours practicing skills to amaze or disgust people. We do what we do in part, perhaps, to get away from the everyday. And I know that 99% of our audience stops to watch for the same reason.

This is interesting, and it may explain why some people hire prostitutes, but it does not address the prostitutes themselves. It is not for me to say, but my gut feeling is that there are few prostitutes who have chosen their profession simply to get away from the monotony of everyday.

The desire to escape the ordinary may be one of the conditions that allow prostitution to flourish, by encouraging patrons, but I don't believe it's one of the conditions that create prostitution.

As for your other metaphor, the "all the world's a stage" one, I would suggest that the human race is the writer and director, collectively. Which means, to me, that since you acknowledge the problems with the structure of society, you are simply trying to pass the buck. We are individually responsible for our part in the collective will that drives the human race - our decisions are microcosms for the choices facing humanity.

                  Jonny,

I think lumping porn, video games, and huffing all in the same boat is a little extreme, don't you think?

Huffing is a terrible thing, obviously, but sooner or later, it becomes a serious unstoppable addiction. It is escapist, you're right, but I doubt anyone has an addiction to porn that's caused them brain damage and evetually death. Again, same with video games.(as an avid gamer, I'm biased, but...) I think it's hard to even compare porn and video games.. I mean, porn is "LOLA GETS FUCKED!" as opposed to "SUPER MARIO BROTHERS!" you know? There's varying degrees of addiction, and I guess to some degree and in some essence all three are addictive.

Really though, coffee is addictive too. Lots of things are. If we went through the list, we'd be here for years. It's the addictions that are more likely to cause emotional and physical pain to yourself and others you should really be worried about.

                  Huffing, yes.
                  Porn, maybe.
                  Video games, rarely.

I just think it's a bit extreme to equalize them.

Jonny: Yo Daniel, I said all those vices are escapes from reality, and pointed at the reason why many of us feel compelled to escape from it. Any health issues that come along with the vices is a whole other deal, a whole other topic.

                        --------------------

Bogle:The desire to escape the ordinary may be one of the conditions that allow prostitution to flourish, by encouraging patrons, but I don't believe it's one of the conditions that create prostitution.

Jonny:I was speaking for the consumers rather than the producers of that commodity. I gave my .02 on the producer's angle earlier in the thread.

Bogle:As for your other metaphor, the "all the world's a stage" one, I would suggest that the human race is the writer and director, collectively.

Jonny: Really, if the "human race collectively" ha ever been consulted on anything, I will eat my dual-drive 9foot uni. We still have to go out and block the street to get half a word in about how we feel about our arrogant leaders' actions. Neither you nor I get a say in who gets payed and who gets bombed.(extreme examples, but neither you or I are ever seriously consulted on anything meaningful)
                        Bogle:
since you acknowledge the problems with the structure of society, you are simply trying to pass the buck. We are individually responsible for our part in the collective will that drives the human race - our decisions are microcosms for the choices facing humanity.

Jonny: I restate that the decisions that affect the world are kept far, far from the touch of the people. Even the UN, the highest expression of global collective decision-making, has received a severe credibility beating from powerful leaders that despise participatory democracy.(even at that high level)
Looking carefully around yourself, you can surely see that as a class, our function in this structure is not to make decisions, but to pay into rent and mortgage charges, and create more wealth for very rich men. It is these men who act as decisionmakers over us. I suspect it is these conditions that lead to a low quality of life for most people, by reducing or removing their decisionmaking power in their own lives. This is what we are escaping from.

Sex is sex and business is business. They have both been around since the beginning of time. Sometimes the two are put together. If somebody gets enjoyment from watching and/or participating then so be it. There is a lot worse out there to see and participate in. We inundate our kids with violence as soon as they are able to sit up on their own but we deny them from viewing the human body and any natural process that we do. We should treat porn flicks the same as any other movie. Watch them with the whole family. Then, when your son asks, "Dad? Does mom put yours in her mouth like that?" You can answer, "No son, that's just a movie." Or when your daughter asks,"Mom, is dad's that big?" You can answer,"No dear, it's just special effects." <img src="graemlins/haha.gif" border="0" alt="[ha ha]" />
