Welcome to Baghdad, NY

[quote]Lawyer Arrested for Wearing a 'Peace' T-Shirt
Wed Mar 5, 8:30 AM ET - Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A lawyer was arrested late Monday and charged with trespassing at a public mall in the state of New York after refusing to take off a T-shirt advocating peace that he had just purchased at the mall.

According to the criminal complaint filed on Monday, Stephen Downs was wearing a T-shirt bearing the words "Give Peace A Chance" that he had just purchased from a vendor inside the Crossgates Mall in Guilderland, New York, near Albany.

"I was in the food court with my son when I was confronted by two security guards and ordered to either take off the T-shirt or leave the mall," said Downs.

When Downs refused the security officers' orders, police from the town of Guilderland were called and he was arrested and taken away in handcuffs, charged with trespassing "in that he knowingly enter(ed) or remain(ed) unlawfully upon premises," the complaint read.

Downs said police tried to convince him he was wrong in his actions by refusing to remove the T-shirt because the mall "was like a private house and that I was acting poorly.

"I told them the analogy was not good and I was then hauled off to night court where I was arraigned after pleading not guilty and released on my own recognizance," Downs told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Downs is the director of the Albany Office of the state Commission on Judicial Conduct, which investigates complaints of misconduct against judges and can admonish, censure or remove judges found to have engaged in misconduct.

Calls to the Guilderland police and district attorney, Anthony Cardona and to officials at the mall were not returned for comment.

Downs is due back in court for a hearing on March 17.

He could face up to a year in prison if convicted.

His son was wearing one that said, "Peace on Earth". What kind of commie, pinko, terrorist-loving, SOBs would wear t-shirt advocating peace?! It's not only anti-American, it's anti-God.

He should be taken out to the village square and be stoned to death.

Lucky he's a lawyer! He should hopefully be able to dig himself out of this one.

It's sometimes pretty duanting trying to change the mechanics of war on a global scale, but we need to remember that we can do our part on a smaller scale. I've had some t-shirts printed up, so that we can wear them on the pitch when we work.
At least this way, we try to make our local community more aware of the problems we *can* fix.
(I got the shirts done pretty cheap, and there's a little typo, but I think people will understand what we're trying to say.)

I hate to pop this bubble because I think its an artfully crafted one , but I think this juggling plumbing thing is a cunning fabrication.
Can you prove you exist?

Did you see his t-shirt design?

"Give Chance a Piece"

Is that in reference to our Chance?

Odd, this Lenny is.

Just a shot in the dark, either its chance himself or maybe kim potter
Or it could really be a real person who thinks bedstains are funny.
(Is it true that jugglers are more inclined statisticly to have been, or be, bedwetters?)

It's either chance or Lenny the plumber has been sniffing his PVC pipe sealant.
Of course, plumbers do spend a lot of time dealing with sewerage and maybe Lenny has a fixation with chance's outlet.
Every-one should watch their drawers!

On the subject of American civil liberties or lack of them, and on the subject of art influencing political thought,
I have always greatly respected the American stand up scene, Pryor, Hicks, Leary and many others, but according to a documentary I watched on the 70's US stand-up scene last night, the last comics to say anything critical of the administration on prime time television were the smothers brothers who were taken off prime time in the early 70's for doing anti vietnam jokes. can that be true , I find it hard to believe a country could produce so many articulate and funny critics of the goverment ,like George Carlin and not give them a decent air time.
Do you guys have stand ups who are critics of the goverment on cable or sattelite , I
I have seen many excellent US and canadian standups doing anti-bush jokes on British TV, last night there was an american guy called Doug Stanhope, he was brutal and he slayed me ,Rich Hall is another regular over here,
my question is, .....is british TV getting these subversive acts because they can't get air time on all the goverment controlled TV networks in the states?

is any one out there talking about the war in their show?
I have been doing political stuff as an after thought whislt i'm hatting, thats been okay ,
But when last week I clumsily blurted out my frustration with peoples apathy , I was loathed by all but two members of the crowd for gathering an audience just to admonish them...not exactly George Carin,
Its hard to tell people the truth and make them like you, but then again Richard Pryor said that laughter is a voice from the soul saying "aint that the truth"

I like Dennis Miller's work alot, he manages to slam the whole shebang pretty thoroughly, and lands on HBO once in awhile. His specials are at most video stores.

Comics are playing REALLY safe over here. Most I've seen are doing the the Jay-leno variety "tell an anti-war joke then immediately follow with a pro-war joke" so as not to piss anyone off.

I was watching MadTV the other night and they had three completely unfunny sketches that were reeking with pro-war propaganda. Sickeningly ignorant, cheap nationalistic stereotyping, gun and flag waiving "we're gonna kick your ass," playing to the lowest possible denomenator.

...

I don't know if this is true, because it was written in Charlie Chaplin's autobiography, but the only film to mock Hitler during Hitler's reign was the 'Great Dictator.' Chaplin was soon driven out of the USA for being un-american.

I do believe that the Holy Trinity of Comedy (The 3 Stooges) actually preceeded Chaplain. Can't think of the flick's title, but they play football with a globe.

Hi Martin,

I can't take the credit for the T-shirt I'm afraid, though I appreciate Lenny's sentiment... I did have a few worries of my own at the Viaduct... pretending to be a Frenchman on the Auckland Waterfront has it's own risks... (grin)

I've justed finished watching a show called "That's Our Bush".

It's broadcast at a lousy hour on one of our "non commercial" free-to-air channels and is a savage comedy about the moron that occupies the "White House". This paticular episode deals with the death penalty and Georges old college mates thinking he has gone soft. The charicatures and satire are superb. The send up of an improv group employed to fake an execution is priceless and the ending (to me anyway), strangely appropriate.

The episodes are at least 2 years old and I'm willing to bet they haven't made any more.

I wonder if this sitcom has or is being shown in the US.

"That's My Bush" had a relatively brief run in the U.S. and is not being made or aired (that I'm aware of) anymore. It was created by the same guys who did the far more successful "South Park".

You can find out more about it at Comedy Central - That's My Bush!
