We've forgotten the blind piano-accordionist Bernadette Conlon, certainly not a circle show but she's becoming legendary in some circles and has been working Melbourne (and other cities' around the world) streets for at least 15 years.
Every-one should watch their drawers!

I was told of a female street performer who worked in the 70's in Europe. Alan Clay mentioned it to me in the early 80's and I've always remembered it because her show was so profoundly simple and poetic and I thought incredibly artful. I've wanted to do it as an exercise but never have.
Anyway she was whiteface (this is long before statues were common) and wore a dickens era costume and had a top hat she would put on the ground in front of her and a small black box with her name in white that she would stand on.
Her entire act was that she would be sad, she would direct her sadness in different ways to different members of her audience, she would be pleadingly sad to one, and defiantly sad to another, pensively sad, pitifully sad, she would just explore and project sad.
Whenever anyone approached her hat she would focus on them and the particular sadness she had chosen for them until the moment they had dropped something into her hat.
Then she would smile at them.
Before returning her gaze to her audience and descending into sadness again.
Never found her or anyone else that had seen her.
But found her inspirational.
Ha ! I know Nicks real name, but I'm not telling. There were enough people looking for him back in the eighties when we shared a flat "Oh bad luck you missed him, he's away in Germany..."
As for some one doing circle shows in the 6os in Covent Garden, I don't know. It was probably Leicester Square as Covent Garden was a full on commercial market, not a wine bar with shit shops and if you had tried ot do ashow there you would have probably been run over by a lorry.
