    Is this "hate" for real?

    Dear All,
I am incredibly new to the idea of street performing- it first sprang to mind about 3 months ago since coming to Uni. I've tried to read as much as I can- I read the postings here everyday and occasionally contribute if I can- and am trying to develop a worthy act. However, most of the posts recently seem to have been as bitter as possible, and there are a couple of things I want to know-

I realise that there must be competition and rivalry in a field such as this, but do some performers really hate others as much as it comes across here? Or is this "I hate you" attitude really a clash of performer's characters, with no real basis?

I know that I risk getting my head bitten off for asking this, as I'm so new to it all, but I thought that if I don't get in and try, then I'm never going to succeed.

    Here's hoping,
    Neil

    Dear Neil,
Thanks for your great posting,it was a good reminder for me!As I have been apart of this what you call BITTERNESS!

See there is alot of history out there!

Because I have been trying really hard to push certain butten's,it has seemed to work.
Now I am sorry if you have been,a bit spun out about all that has been said, and the way it has come across from me!

Alot of the people would not have taken this bait ,if it did not strike a cord with what has been, said!

Not every one is like this ,as you say full of hate!

I try to not hate alot, but sometimes I can not help myself.

So right now I am going to give it a go,

    LDR

ps-I should of knowen better than to listen to what the others said, thanks Neil!

      Hi Neil,

Some of the bitterness is real, some of it is made up, sometimes it's our 'ironic wit' that looks really bad in print.

By the way, it's great you're READING about street performing, but that will be of limited help to you my friend, because this is a hands on kind of thing. If you don't do it, you don't get it.

Neil, it is great that you are researching the idea. Now get off your butt and write your act. Then go to a place, a college campus is good, and perform it once or twice. Rewrite. Reperform. Then go make some money with it!!!! Hell you may be good enough to tell the University to go to hell and take up performing as a way of life.

          Hello All,
At risk of running off the thread, I have been writing an act for myself over the last few months, and have certainly used a lot of the advice I have found in postings here- now I just need to ensure that I am myself, and am happy with what I am performing.
The trouble i have found is that, certainly here in Southampton, I have NEVER seen a street performer, and the Council were slow in responding to a request for a licence. (Either this means that they are not wanted, or that there is a potentially lucrative, untapped pitch here.) However, at length, I have one, and my first show is just under one month away- I CAN'T WAIT! I really don't dare risk trying without a licence- not until I am happy that what I do will draw a crowd- would Council / Police break up a show, or wait until afterwards?
(LDR: I don't know you, but I think that deleting your posts was a good thing. Without knowing anyone personally, I can only draw up images of their personality in my mind, and my respect for you has increased enormously for doing that. Good on you.)
          Cheers everybody,
          Neil
