From: Pluto I made a pilgrimage to the annual Gypsy gathering in the Sth Coast Of France.....to a little coastal village called Saintes-Maries-de-la-mer some years back which was interesting.Gypsies from all parts of the World get together for a few days to to venarte their patron Saint Sarah. The Roma...the name used by most central & eastern European Gypsies...celebrate Sara-la-Kali...the black saint. There is also a procession to the sea carrying Saint Sarah's remains.
The area is quite beautiful as it's down in the Camarge where there are pink flamingos, wild horses & bulls. There is some good Gypsy music to be had to accompany the ambience of the village.I guess Gypsies have moved up with the times....& have more modern vehicles...but there were a few colourful carts. There is more clorful Gypsy carts in Romania of course as it's the Gypsy capital of the World.Even though Gypsies may not be as colourful now days as they used to be...they still have the Gypsy blood in them & carry on their traditon with fortune telling etc.
I also had a good time in Romania....as it is a really beautiful country & some of the nature is so pristine.I was in Romania in the spring once & it was so beautiful with all the different shades of trees...from auburn, burgandy, yellow & all shades of green etc. There were Gypsies with horse & cart...carrying bundles of branches * whatever everywhere? Some of the villages looked really quaint with weather-beaten rock structures & moss slate roofs & roosters running around & chooks chooking about. It would be a hard place to live....but it is really picturesque.Sighisoara is certainly a quaint town. That is where Vlad Tepes was born...the Romanian prince who inspired Bram Stoker(the Irish novelist)to write the so called Dracula as we know today. It's good that the town hasn't sold out...& you wouldn't even know it had anything to do with Dracula....if you didn't know it about it;s history....as i didn't see any DRacula pictures anywhere.I stayed there for about 4 or 5 days.I also had lunch in the house he was born.He is a Romanian folklore hero...because he helped frighten the Turks...as he would stick them arse on end...on pikes. When they were out in battle...Vlad would get his men...to disguise themselves as Turks...so the Turks would get confuded who was who?
I also visited Bran castle....which is famous....for being called Dracula's castle.I could imagine that it would of been more kooky before it got painted with a white-wash Mediterranean kind of look inside. The stairs looked really old...as did some room with a really old gnarly 4 bed-post.THey say that Vlad probably only stayed there for 2-3 days all in all.....so that really takes the kookiness out of it.Nevertheless the castle really looks kooky later in the day!The castle was used as an old German toll station for villages by passing the roads.I can't remember the exact history....as when you see all these places it's easy to forget over time.
THere certainly is a beautiful palace in Sinai! The interior is incredible.Check out all the wood carving...it is so ornate. It would have taken friggin' years to carve all that ebony & rose wood.
There is also some Gypsy village in Romania...with amazing kind of palace looking houses.I didn't go there but i've seen it in a book.Apparently it's the more well off Gypsy village.
I even went to the so called second biggest building in the World in Bucharest....called the Houses For the People. It's friggin' huge.It was weird when i went on a tour of the building & no one else turned up when i wanted to go...so it was a one on one...with just me & the guide. It felt kind of ridiculous to go on a one on one tour of the second biggest building in the World. When i left the building there was a pack of wild dogs on the lawn that followed me around for quite a distance. It spun me out a bit...but i manged to get away...by crikey.
Also there is an impressive Hungarian castle in Romania...called Hunedora.Gosh! It's an interesting castle by crikey!Apparently the old Romanian prime minister got a steel mill built next to the castle as he didn't like it....as it really is an impressive Hungarian castle.Gorblimey!Transylvania is beautiful.I even met a German scientist in the woods who was studying wolves...which was interesting.
I also performed at the Comedian's Feast another year in Romania which was interesting...well last year.I worked really hard & did eight 50 minute shows over 3 days.It was bizarre to have Gypsies in the front row laughing...showing their gold teeth & that.I went well & people enjoyed it.I guess it's not everyday they get a gooOse-weasel go through...jumping around on spring-shoes like a wild kangaroo.I spent much more money on travel & visas than i got
paid...but it was well worth it all in all.Gorblimey!I couldn't believe my friggin' trolley that kept collapsing.THe friggin' wheel kept rolling off so i had to look all over Timisoara for makeshift bits which was a bit of a drag.I even had to have helpers help me carry my stuff from place to place to perform at times. The hotel i stayed in had no hot water but waht the heck! Also i had to walk over a kilometre to get to the food hall...which was pretty basic....but then again you have to eat.
The last show i did was quite a surprise as i was one of the last acts on the big stage near the closing of the festival....& it was such a big rock'n'roll stage & there were thousands of people in the big square. There were a few hundred watching me....& i had to go for a full 50 minutes on the main stage.I can't believe i got through it...as i just goosed about doing whatever...& i did well.I thought i was going to totally bomb...when my pants fell down...& i just couldn't tie them back up & i was all tangled up in my springs & that & it took me 15 minutes to get it together!I was almost like a wild animal....crawling & wriggling about trying to untangle my pantaloons rope...from my wrethed spring-shoe...& also getting my fire-skipping rope caught in the sporing of the shoe.THere was one funny part where i whacked my plastice gherkin for a 6...out into the crowd & someone threw it back & it stuck in the back of my guitar...which put a whole in it!Crikey! What a time! They would also like to have me back for next year....but i don't know what i'm up to yet!
Crikey! The castle in France called Carcassonne Chateau is a huge Fuckoff amazing castle!Amazing it's so well intact.I slept 2 nights in the bush near Carcassonne castle....& checked it out by crikey! In the wax museum there was a jester juggling.
I really like some of the Flemish medieval towns aswell.....particularly Ghent & brugge.THe castle in Ghent...Gravensteen is a piece...with it's moat & that!Anyway i better dash.....as i have to fly my castle-spaceship around the Universe to catch some more nonsense!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FromIt was about 97 i think....when i was in Luxembourg for the first time?I should of kept a diary but i never did!I found a dilapidated run down building that i slept in for a few nights...& would wake up in the morning with freezing toes as there were no windows & it was the winter time.Crikey the icycles having off the broken staircase was quaint.I went to about 11 towns all around Luxembourg & checked out most of the castles.I saw all these posters around Luxembourg about some circus called Il Florengio....who were on tour in Luxembourg City(the capital).Oneday i went round to the site & by crikey...did they have a big set-up.They had camels, donkeys, lions, elephants, dogs, tigers, monkeys & all sorts under a huge Big-Top.I thought i'm not so much into circus's with animals...but it would be good to check it out anyway....as i saw lots of posters around Luxembourg which made me curious...& besides....when do you ever see a circus in Luxembourg in the winter? You don't go to Luxembourg every day.I would travel around Luxembourg a bit & then rock up when it was time for the show....but apparently it kept cancelling everyday as it wasn'y getting the numbers in.I was getting more intrigued now...& just kept hanging around Luxembourg until i could see the show.It eventually went ahead on a Saturday...even though there wasn't many people.I was surreal the whole...build up to see the circus...& also not much of an audience there....& seeing all the animals in action...with the whole set up & that.At the end of the show there was a rountine with all the circus members sitting around 1 long table serving spaghetti & playing around...& then they even gave out bowls of spaghetti to the audience.I was hungry at the time & didn't have much money, but i throught they were fake bowls of spaghetti at first & then i realised that they were real.I was just about to make my way...closer to the ring...to try & score a bowl of spaghetti...but i was too slow...& that was that.By that time it was too late to get anything in town as most nearly everything was shut & i couldn't affords any pub meals.I did manage to get a packet of chips though.Nevertheless it was an unusual qaint time in Luxembourg.Anyway toodleloo over & over again!Cheeers!Crikey! We had some wild times in this little mousey grey Fiat!John Haw was such a top bloke!Everyone enjoyed his company.....even though he was a nomadic loner. He was twice my age....but we were really good friend's as we had similar nomadic stories to tell...& were both fool's.He drove his mousey grey Fiat all over the place & even lived in it!He was a real minimalist & had tiny gadgets that he would make & that!He had driven that little Fiat from Sydney to Perth...just a 2 cylinder car!He was also a bush mechanic & used to live on an Aboriginal community in the Outback in Mintipi....where he had a rough make-shift shed for a house & also a weather-beaten tipi.I never actually went there myself.
John never lived in a domesticated situation & was a real out there character....with real good human nature. He didn't look weird at all...quite normal looking...but was more bizarre than so many domesticated people.
Oneday he had this dream of an ant's antennae & came up with the idea of the World's first flexible spring switch...while he was living in a tin shed.He didn't have an academic background....but still had a clever insight to electronics & lots of other things. He wrote volumes & volumes of information on his flexible spring switch idea....& said it was quite a process to try & get it patented. He even got one of the head managers of the ANZ Bank to invest some shares on his idea as....it was looking good...to being a real seller...as it could be used in many forms of technology.
John said he would hire me as the company jester & could make a funny show when we were at trade fairs.
John with 3 other Aboriginals once risked their lives to save some sacred Aboriginal land from some big mining company....& in the end won! This flexible spring thing was looking like it might go somewhere....but John wanted to put the money he made into help create intelligent technology for the benefit of the environment!
Later on in time i was in Europe for a few years thinking that when i get back to Oz...it would be good to tell John all about my adventures...as i hadn't heard from him for a while.I was at the World Rainbow GAthering in Australia in 2000.....& late one night when i was sitting around a camp....one of JOhn's friend's coincidently figured out that i was Rumpelstiltkin...& said that John had passed away.He said that John offered to give a Koori guy a lift home late one night around the hills of Mount Magnificent....& suddenly a car came over some slope & hit his greay Fiat head-on & JOhn died. The Koori guy was totally alright & didn't get hurt. The driver that hit the Fiat was really pissed!John's Fiat was eventually pulled away by a tow-truck(& he was still in it as they couldn't get him out as the steering wheel had squahed him in!).I forget the name of the chap who told me of John's fate....but he also said that John looked like a prince in a coffin..when he saw him before the funeral.
I was really touched by this....as John was such a sound character....& such a good soul mate!He was always so supportive & good-natured with most people. He always wanted me to get my poetry published....but still i haven't got around to it!He was ready to help me on it...as he used to sometimes work with publishing! He was a real dime a dozen & had a great sense of humour...even though he wasn't interested in being a comedian. It's a shame he's not still with us....but that's the way life is!Make the most of it while you can!

I remember another time....being in John's tiny little Fiat & we suddenly pulled up at the lights....& so did a huge, mammoth, humungous truck! We turned our heads at the same time as the truck driver did to us & suddenly John & i were in absolute hysterics because the contrast was just so ridiculous! We were in this tiny little mousey grey go-go mobile...which even had it's front bumper-bars held on with elastic bands.....& we felt so tiny next to that enormous monster of a thing! It was real street-theatre & everso goofy! The expression on the truck-drivers face even made us laugh more....as he just couldn't see the humour in it!
P.S.Go on & on.......Go Go GooOsey!
