This subject really needs a title of it's own.
If you're going out to raise money for a good cause(esp. this weekend), I can offer 3 very useful tips.
1) Plan ahead, sometimes only a few hours is enough.
2) Pick your beneficiary VERY carefully, IN ADVANCE!
3) RING THEM UP AND GET THEM TO SEND A REPRESENTATIVE TO YOUR GIG.
This is the key move. When I first tried to do a charity gig there was constant doubt about my veracity. If you tell the Salvos, Red Cross or whoever, that you think you can make them a few hundred, let alone thousand in one day, they'll send some-one (with tins and stuff) believe me. Maybe even ask the local cops or firemen to send a rep. to make sure the money goes where you say it will.
This can give you unprecedented access to performance sites never before used and you can screw the crowd mercilessly for your cause. You can even get your audience to bottle for you.
PS tip #4 Celebrate afterwards.
