Back in the late '70's I used to watch A. Whitney Brown put Brownie, his dog, on a bar stool in a hat , glasses with a cigar hanging out of his mouth and then just sit back and wait as the crowd gathered around.
Didn't even have to lift a finger ... marvelous! -
Andrew Eliot's turban tying bit at the start of his Indian magic show is superb. It is subtle yet generates intense fascination and curiosity. By the time he is ready to begin his show, the audience's concentration is absolute.
I don't know if he still uses Victoria in his show (Australia only) but if he put her in the centre of the pitch (no matter how cold), he would gather a crowd of hundreds within minutes without doing anything at all. The turban routine would then complete the crowd gather and preparation. Victoria is a very fat 10-12 ft live Diamond python and she has a more interesting personality and better manners than several performers I know.

Rex Boyd has a superb act involving a doll in a bag and a recording of a baby crying. This is a fairly lenghty but hysterically entertaining crowd gatherer and in Salisbury I counted an audience of about 900 people gather about two years ago.Comment

I don't know about best crowd builds but I'm going to salisbury next week-end now....cheers jester...and look out rex ..your secret pitch has been busted....
but seriously ...
Legendry Crowd builders......Pepe ,leandre, livingspace
...they're all differnt but the one thing they have in common is they all make you think that you (the audience) are the only one watching, the only one that's in on the joke!...... until you suddenly find your self part of a huge edge usually by the roar of laughter....

Crowd Building Gone Wild:
"SAN PEDRO CUTUD, Philippines (AP) -
At least 13 Philippine men and women were nailed to wooden crosses north of Manila in an annual Good Friday re-enactment of Jesus Christ's crucifixion. The Lenten ritual, which is opposed by religious leaders in the Philippines, Southeast Asia's largest predominantly Roman Catholic country, attracts droves of tourists to the farming town of San Pedro Cutud, 70 kilometres north of the capital....
"The Catholic devotees, including at least three women, had their palms and feet nailed to the cross as a form of penance for sins, to pray for a sick relative or to fulfil a vow. Dozens of men, with faces shrouded by scarves, also formed a procession along a dusty road leading to the hill, followed by crowds of children and spectators...
"The men stripped to their waists, cut their bare backs with broken bottles attached to a piece of wood and then beat themselves with woven bamboo whips....

The best one I ever seen is,Bike Boy!
He turnes his chain-saw on and leaves it going for about 10 minutes, picks it up and rides his BMX around in the circle, throwing the chain-saw around whist on top of the handle bars and seat!
At the same time he lights a fire torch, leaves that on the ground!
Also puts his music on really loud, the words of the song (Your just a superstar).
Also gets his microphone out and tells them a show is about to begin!
And then to the suprise of the recently aquired front row,of people he announces that there is going to be a show!
That is amazing because that was all my shows in 13 years of street performing in just his crowd build, and it was not even his show!
Now that is the most amazing, crowd build I know!
LDR
I forgot to mention that all of this was done before they even get to experince Bike Boy's personality, incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best crowd gathering I have ever seen was at Poole Quay last thursday night. Two thugs started a fight outside a pub, the police came running in and so did most of my audience. It was the biggest crowd I've seen there.
I then climbed upon my walking ladder and gave the nice people who stayed a running commentary on what was happening. This was probably the best part of my show and all the idiots missed it.
Why parents with children would want to run over and watch something like that is beyond me, but hey ho.
I'm not sure who won the fight.
