I hope you're not knocking democracy Martin, because in the blessed US, it's the only thing keeping a select few of us living high on the hog while the population is thinned in other parts of the world....." <hr></blockquote>

You may well be whiter than me, (for whatever you think thats worth) but i've met lint more comphehensible.
"Democracy/ the USA /a select few living high on the hog?"
I can only presume your experimenting with some newfound irony but heres a rule of thumb, if you don't make any sense any intelligence you may have will remain your secret.
The universe itself cannot contain my indifference to you being upset.
I'm organising a show for poor people in a poor country, your not interested. Thanks for sharing
Its only the fact that you'd rather be beaten than dead that stops me continuing.

Glancing through these boards, i noticed with great dissapointment the seemingly disparaging remarks made about Americans, and living high on the hog, and even a few knocks about democracy. As for our brethern in France, yes... you CAN believe the "propaganda".

I close in attatching the following article, written by Canadian TV personality Gordon Sinclair in the 1970's (vintage may be slightly off). Stop and think about it before you bash the U S of A and what it TRUELY stands for.

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars! into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.

You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon -! not once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

              Stand proud, America!

What the hell has this got to do with an attempt by Australasian performers trying to do something about an issue in Australasia. If you want to express your Nth American political opinions start your own conversation. The only reason the US even entered this discussion was responses to some-one else's inappropriate remarks and now you too think it's a forum for your opinions.

This is about East Timor, not the US. There are other parts of the world besides America, you narrow minded self agrandising twit.

You've not even bothered to register yet you come here to criticise us. Go away, pretender.

Aint nuthing like good old retro feel good propaganda from the 70's.
Before this descends into an impractical thread with flamebaiting pro's and cons regarding americas place in the world. (in these particularly sensitive couple of days where americans, not being trained in the introspective arts, either study what passes for info on their TV's or else their paper placemats at the takeout)
May I just say that I have made inquiries and am making others today (i just got back from canada where I had a nasty hard-drive wiping episode involving Norton Systemworks)
I have a list of all who have expressed interest and I will be contacting them privately by the end of this week with what amounts to a plan.
Incidently it is common knowedge that along with a mutitude of other atrocities Saddam Hussain was the evil mastermind responsible for that hidious pickle/gerkin thing in every quarter pounder.
To those americans still miffed by bleating on these boards, I'd suggest theres more important matters at hand, 2 large craters in NY , a sherriff who's eyes are dangeriously close and can't chew and watch TV at the same time without choking, the fact that there are 2 (yes 2) contestants from the same state in this years Miss america competition.
There will always be liberal leftwing semi-radicals having cosy little verbages with the outraged right, but heres a hint, try and use material from this century, it makes you appear more modern. (I know thats an insult, modern conservative being an oxymoron) but then I'm an insulting guy.

If one intends on having some sort of intelligent discussion about a subject then knowledge of said subject is usually a pre-requisite.
In the interests of such an intelligent discussion I offer the following:
                            www.counterpunch.org
                            www.antiwar.com
                            www.nowarcollective.com
                            www.commondreams.org/newswire.htm
                            www.korpios.org/resurgent/CIAtimeline.html
                            www.consortiumnews.com/
I dont believe that Americans are evil but your government and bueracracy have a well documented and irrefutable history of global hegemony.
There are also some interesting parallels between the Roman Empire of ancient times and theUS empire of modern times. As pointed out in an excellent documentary on Channel Four in England that is currently running on Saturday evening I believe.
For further educational bedtime reading i also recommend John Pilger or the highly respected Noam Chomskey who both have several books available on this subject matter.
It is the people of any democratic country or nation state that are ultimately responsible for what the leaders do in their names.

The truth is out there..... it's just not very nice!
But I think putting smiles on peoples dials helps.

As I think Mark Twain once said "Every action is a political action."
