    Music Everywhere

The City of Chicago's Mayor's Office of Special Events is apparently paying musicians and buskers to work streets and parks this summer; might be something to check out. Call their office and ask about the Music Everywhere program.

To busk during Music Everywhere 2002 (courtesy of the Mayor of Chi-town), get a street performers permit at City Hall, room 107 (go to the office with glass doors). Bring some form of ID and a book to read.

Once you have a permit you might try setting up a tent or a lemonade stand right in the middle of room 107.

Permits cost $50 (in 2002) and are good until Feb. no matter which month the permit is issued. With permit proudly displayed on one's garmets, the permitee is free to busk throughout most of the City of Chicago - sort of.

Update: If you order a permit and then choose to not renew it the next year, or not to do so on time, then you will have to pay an extra $25 penalty for not renewing. Quite odd.

Busking in Chicago is kinda tricky. On the one hand - you do get a street performers permit, on the other hand - each festival and location has its own rules. We were assured by special events people in City Hall that we can work at any city-sponsored festival, but 3 minutes after we set-up our face-painting gig at Folk and Roots Festival - we got closed by the manager...So, if you want to work at festivals there - check with each festival in advance...your permit may not be enough...
