    Amazing Festival

Usually, I wouldn't highly recommend a festival, cause well everyone will go and no one will make any money. I'm not greedy, unlike other perfomers and will share this info.

The organizers have a vision of community spirit that can be seen every Saturday morning. The event attracts large, friendly crowds and is well organized. I was approached a few months ago by the organizers to help give them a hand in coordinating variety type acts. They were open to my suggestions and many of their own. They are still in the beggining stages of the overall picture but in a short time all of the kinks will have been worked out.

They are looking for family friendly acts that are on the shorter side 20-30 min max. A different performer each week, as there are a lot of repeat customers. With one performer you can get 2-3 shows in during the festival. Hats are generous for the Florida area $100-$150. Unfortunately, space is limited but they are working on that. The pitch as of right now is in between one crafter and the kids zone on top of a gravel parking lot. They are looking at paving it in.

The crafters are very friendly and understand the importance of entertainment. Just remember as performers we sometimes neglect to see the importance of the crafters but the festival needs both crafters and entertainment to succeed. So controlling your crowds is important cause the next booth is so close.

The kids zone is a tent provided by the festival beside the pitch used for childrens activities, ie balloon animals and facepainting. The kids zone is also a busking opportunity.

I highly recommend this festival to anyone who is passing through Florida. It would be really nice if they could make it a two day festival but for a one day festival, it rocks!

Please do yourself and others the favour, one performer each week, share the spot, don't be greedy, be friendly and enjoy your art. karma.

    Cool!

      Hey, Chris

Is there other pitches near the festival that would make it worth buying a plane ticket and coming down for a week?

        He's back.

Hey Chris, how was your summer?

I'm glad you posted your review about the market. I was going to pass it up, but after reading your notes I sent them an email and they got right back with me. We'll be performing this Saturday.

What happened with your BG gig?

Marcus, there is always Pier 60 in Clearwater Beach about 1/2 hour away from St. Pete. I did about 4 months there (April-August) and it paid the bills. I think there is some reconstruction going on now around the pier, so you may want to double check before you head south.

          Hey guys

          Mark,

Nice to hear from you guys. My summer was amazing! BG and I keep playing email tag, suppose to set up another audition, but not holding my breath. If it's suppose to happen it will. Might not be the right time yet.

I hope you guys are doing well. You should have a blast tomorrow. Let me know how it goes.

I was looking at festivals in Winterhaven. You guys still live out there? What festivals are coming up? Suppose to be some kind of show and shine i think? Any details would be awsome.

          Marcus,

The only other place that I can think of is Clearater Pier 60 as Mak mentioned. Smaller hats and Dallas the organizer of the festival doesn't seem to care about the performers, especially ones who have great shows. He does the rollabolla so he would make you take that out. Even though you do it better!

I am in the process of putting together a nice festival tour for Dec - January in South Florida, then back to Canada. I will keep you posted and see if I can put togher a busy week for the both of us. It would be nice to work with you again.

I heard there was a busker fest in Utah? Any details?

          Cool!

            Busker Fest In Utah Hmmm?

If there is a busker festival in Utah I havent heard of it and I think I would of considering I am the only busker in this state. As a matter of fact I dont think anyone in this state knows what a busker is. There is a art festival every year in june, they bring in street shows. There are a few festivals that are open to having street performers but I doubt they would fly anyone in. If you give me more info on what you have heard I will look into it. By the way I use your I got fired line all the time. I think it has grown on me.

              cheese with your whine???

Just to clarify, I welcome any and all performers to MY pitch. Just kinda pisses me off when you come with one show and several weeks later your show is mine!!!!! Damn sponges!!

If i remember correctly, Brendan performed rolla bolla also. Amyways, about the market......

Chris did pull off a couple of good shows (even though I'd heard the material before...humpf!) The pitch is VERY, VERY, VERY small and on gravel.

The organizer is very friendly and the crowds are a good quality of people.

              JUST MY .02 cents

                rolla bolla?

                Dallas,

If I came down would you let me use my rolla bolla on your pitch? Although it isn't my favorite part of my show it wouldnt be worth coming if I couldn't use it. I promise not to steal any of your jokes. Any other information I can get on your pitch would be greatly appreciated (rules, policys, how many shows I could get in etc.)

                Thanks

                  Originator?

                  Dallas,

The 1st problem to your post is this; "I welcome everyone to MY pitch." It isn't YOUR pitch. It is a pitch that is available to you with permission from the Pier 60 Festival and the city of Clearwater.

The festival has hired you to coordinate the entertainment. By accepting their payment you become a professional coordinator, and in respect should act in a professional manner.

If you were ever to come visit my home city and would like to work at the pitch I call home, I would never have the coordinator ask you to show her your Right To Work Papers. I would say you would be a benifit to the market and to their guests.

Unfortunately for you, being the coordinator your job is to look out for the best interest of the festival above and beyond your own personal benefit.

Secondly, I find it humorous that if any other performer came to the Pier 60 festival and witnessed your show they would say the same thing. They are called STOCK jokes. Originality can't be claimed.

I will be the first one to agree that I use stock jokes, as many other performers including yourself do. My show is not original for the most part, the important part is that I present a good show. I do not stake a claim towards other people's work.

How many people do the lighter gag? Camera toss? Lighter fluid crowd control? Remote control airplane? "I'm trying to raise a million dollars by midnight", "Kid's it's a game, go get more"? etc.

The difference is that when I came to your festival I changed my show so that our lines wouldn't conflict. When you see me perform at another festival, ie. Sat AM Market and you are not performing I will do my show the way I want.

We both know that we bump heads on a professional level yet can still enjoy a beer at the end of the night. I hope this posting doesn't change that, this is simply a reply in my defense.

                  Cool!

Oh the weather outside is frightful...

This sounds like a great venue that I'd love to work. Unfortunately I'm in bone-chilling skin-freezing Wisconsin with my wife, kids, dog and mortgage. Tomorrow I'm in Chicago and this weekend I'll be in Grand Rapids again, and I doubt it's any warmer there. Did I mention that I hate winter? And don't get me started on Christmas...

                        what you missed

                        Rola Bolas and stock slagging.

speaking of stock material, gentlemen. it should be noted that every piece of stock or generic material was, in fact, written by someone at some time. or in the case of many jokes, written by several someones in differnt places at different times. (as many of them are basically obvious to the comic mind). i learned this at my pier 39 audition years ago. scotty meltzer commented to me that a particular line which was used by nearly everyone, he had in fact written for the dream team years earlier. and it does stand to reason. someone wrote each line once, and when it has been stolen and re-used enough times it becomes "stock" or "generic". i am not necesarily saying donīt use it. i am just saying some actual person at some time wrote the joke that one feels he has the right to use, as it is in the pool of standard material.

                        food for thought.

                          stock jokes

I believe that Butterfly man is a major originator of a lot of "Stock Material" that we see in so many acts today. You may not have heard them from him but from someone else...trace it back and it has a good chance of coming from him.

                            My point

The problem I have with "stock" lines and gags, is that many people use them in their shows and call them MY lines. If you use lines that you know aren't yours, the least you could do is not take credit for them.

Anyways, This thread was about the Sat AM Market and we seem to have gone off the wrong road.

I am the first to say that most of the things i say are "stock" i will also be the first to admit that Robert is where i heard most of them. I caught his act several times in San Fran when i was living in San Mateo. I have even thanked him personally through emails for his inspiration.

I also believe that as a member of the Board of Directors and an Employee of Sunsets at Pier 60 and a representative of Pier 60, i CAN refer to it as "my" pitch.

I Welcome any and all performers to come down.

After 10 years at Pier 60, and hundreds of friendships built with other entertainers who have passed through( even Chance), i can honestly say that never has one person rubbed so many people the wrong way. And if Chris is my only complainer, then i must not be half bad. Not only myself, but with every act working here.

Grow up! And may your hats always be large!!!
