    Work in China

    October 16, 2005

    Hello,

I am businessman who has been working in Tianjin, China for the past 2 ½ years. Recently I returned home to Canada for my brother’s wedding and while I was there I found several opportunities to watch street performances from artists. I have always been fascinated by their unique abilities and their love of the audience. Upon my return to Tianjin, I retold these experiences to some Chinese friends and their resulting enthusiasm has inspired me to offer several unique opportunities to performers who are interested in coming to China to perform.

I am looking for acts that are geared for the adult crowd (however they cannot be dialogue based due the language barrier) (fire, singing, dancing, juggling, body comedy, etc...) and which are interested in performing in Tianjin, China for a 3-6 month period over this coming winter. These opportunities can start immediately for those who are ready to commit early. The performers who commit would be willing to perform at an indoor venue nightly for approximately 40-60 minutes for twenty consecutive nights. After which, they may or may not wish to have a five to seven day rest period and then resume another twenty day performance schedule. This will be the standard schedule for the term of your agreement. The only variable in the agreement is that the local government requires that you donate 2 daytime performances per month to area schools.

As part of a six month agreement between us, I will reimburse your round-trip economy airfare and cover the first $100 USD/month of your lodging. Lodging in China is very affordable, a fully furnished 80m apartment costs approximately $200 USD/ month, depending on your lifestyle. I will also supply transportation to and from all performances and an evening meal if so desired.

Your rate of pay per performance will be $100 USD. This rate will be guaranteed for the duration of the agreement. Dependant on your abilities to attract an audience and promote yourself throughout the local media with our help, your rate may increase substantially. I will also provide, to those performers who are interested, language classes as well as vocal and dance training. I am also hoping that select performers will join me in developing a series of Fringe Festivals within ten major cities in China in the coming year or so.

This is a once in a life-time opportunity for the right people. China is an amazing country full of culture and opportunity and I am hoping you will consider coming and experiencing it first hand. I would like to hear from you ASAP regarding your decision.

    Respectfully Yours,

I'd go but I can't stand to eat chinese food more than twice a week.

I didn't say not to do it. Just be careful. The reasons I said "caution:"

Immediately the tone of the post sounded like one of those money transfer emails that you get about some guy in Africa that wants to put $30,000,000 in your bank account.

Flight reimbersed - If I was doing it, I'd want them to pay in advance and I'd want the return ticket in my hand before I left.

Half of your lodging cost - It may be more than he says for a decent domicile. Also, it's weird that he doesn't pay for and set up your place and just pay less of a guarantee - esp. if he wants you to be working right away.

It's a different country. Law and followup are difficult.

He sounds inexperienced in this type of thing.

It could be that he's only inexperienced and doesn't know how to do this kind of thing. It may not be a scam. Be wary not only of it being a ripoff, but also of a getting into a situation where the client isn't ready to take care of your needs.

            English teachers?

I received a personal email from the original poster and I replied to him that he'd have to improve his proposal significantly. What amazed me is that he wants promo photos and a DVD, but only offers $100 a day.

I googled him and he deals with English teachers in China. He's posted job offers on a few ESL boards. He seems to think we'll work under the same conditions and for the same pay as an ESL instructor who took a four week course.

I agree with Scot that the tone sounds like a Nigerian money transfer scam, but I he's just inexperienced. If it was a scam the money would actually be attractive.

            -Aaron

P.S. Scot, I was disappointed not to see you in Portland. Too much music video work?

I also received a personal email & gave pretty much the same reply as Aaron. Thanks for the great advice, Scot.

Kudos, Gav; that was a much more interesting way of saying, "He contacted me, too"
