Sparx in the City to Showcase Ohio Performing Arts Ensembles
Auditions for Paid Performers Will Be Held On April 12 and April 14
(Cleveland, OH – March 25, 2005)
The performing arts, in all their splendor, will be at their pulse-raising best on the streets of downtown Cleveland this summer as Sparx In the City turns on the switch for the third year in a row.
Sparx in the City is a civic marketing initiative that enhances Cleveland’s cultural livability and tourism efforts by featuring exciting arts activities at the street-level. Through a 16-week program, called Street Beats, and an annual arts showcase, called the Gallery Hop, Sparx in the City puts the spotlight on the local arts community during the summer months. Street Beats, which features high-quality performers on the most popular downtown sidewalks, takes place every Friday and Saturday beginning June 3 through September 17.
In a bold move aimed at featuring more of Northeast Ohio's high-quality performing artists, Sparx in the City is offering from $80 to $1200 per two-hour shift for selected soloists and professional ensembles. Program organizers are seeking colorful dance or theatrical troupes, instrumental or vocal ensembles, and various high-energy entertainers, who can attract and awe lunchtime and dinnertime onlookers.
Live auditions for Sparx Street Beats will be held on two days: Tuesday April 12 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Thursday April 14 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m in downtown Cleveland. Auditions are by appointment.
Those interested in auditioning for Street Beats may log onto www.cleveland.com/sparx or they may call the Sparx hotline at 216-426-7335 for more information, to schedule an audition time and to download a Sparx Street Beats application.
Audition judges are Andrew May of Great Lakes Theater Festival; Tony Brown of The Plain Dealer; and Randy Rollison of Cleveland Public Theatre, who will be joined by advisory panelists representing various cultural organizations, downtown agencies, and media outlets.
Sparx in the City producer Susie Frazier Mueller says a broader effort is being made to find and screen the many performing arts ensembles around our region. “We really see this as an opportunity to showcase our creative class right at the City’s front door. While it gives the artists an opportunity to build new audiences and generate revenue, it also provides residents, workers and tourists a cultural amenity that doubles as an entrée into the local art scene.”
During Friday lunch time performers may be seen on Public Square, in the Warehouse District, at Euclid Ave. and E. Ninth St. and in the Theater District in the E. 14th St.-Euclid Ave. area. During the Friday and Saturday dinner shifts, they are likely to be found in the Warehouse District, E. Fourth St. at Euclid Ave. the Cleveland Theater District, and in Ohio City or Tremont.
As summer winds down in mid-September, Sparx in the City will present its three-day Gallery Hop on Friday, September 16 -18. As Ohio’s largest showcase of art galleries, studios, festivals, and institutions over one weekend, this 3rd annual event will make it easy for visitors and residents to explore Cleveland’s rich art offerings. More than 100 locations are expected to be open, with trolleys mobilizing the public through eight districts. Locations will range from Tremont and Ohio City on the west to University Circle and Little Italy on the east.
Sparx in the City is presented by National City with support from The Cleveland Foundation, The George Gund Foundation, The Downtown Cleveland Partnership, American Greetings, Forest City, Dominion, The Cleveland Theater District, Adcom Communications, COSE, Tenable Event Services, Meredith Camp Events, and Executive Arrangements.
