    Hello from Scotland

    Hiya folks,
I'm reasonably new to all this having only done the Edinburgh fringe last summer under the imaginatively titled 'Blades, Flames & Nails' - it's kept me in bookings between finding an altogether more distinctive and audience friendly name. It doesn't take much guessing [or at least that's the idea] just what my show involves so I won't bother boring you with any such details.
Just wondered if anyone could tell me of any decent festivals or the like coming up in Europa this year? I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could spare the time to point me someplace as beng fairly new I don't have much of a clue.
One more wee question. I'm thinking about using a gun [starting pistol] to draw a large crowd to start my show instead of the standard whistles, whips, amp-cans etc. Anyone know how this goes down throughout Europe both with the citizens and the long arm of the law?
Thanks goes out to anybody good enough to help me out and "hi" to Big Ben, Conrad, Nigel Spin, Clare and Tim. Anyone know Big Bens email address? [If you're reading this, email me - spikedanburnt@performers.net, cheers].
In the immortal words of Stuart,
    'stay alive'
    spike.

Well I woulden't recomend using it here in the uk - as you know pistols are illeagal - and while starting guns are not - if you use one in the street you will be arrested.
A friend of mine fired a blank gun in the street and it ended up with him being chased down by police swat teams and helicopters after a terrified grannie phoned the police.

Just as I thought, well no point in wasting money on that then! The idea was that it would be cheaper, lighter and more compact than an amp-can (easier to get hold of too) seeing as my gear is already pretty bulky and heavy. Thanks for the advice, with hindsight it seems like a daft question but just wanted to be sure. Seeing as you are from these shores do you know of any good busker festivals/events this summer in Holland, Belgium, Austria, even England? (Or anyone else reading for that matter).
I'm going to sound quite niave here, but having never travelled with the tools of my trade outwith the UK I was wondering what the situation is regarding transporting my case with dube knives and bed of nails contained within to mainland Europe, can anyone help?
Also would like to know how Covent Garden works. I'm thinking about going down soon but do I have to register before a certain time in the morning or what? Again, many thanks to the man/woman who so supplies me with the answers I seek.
      Cheers,
      spike.

Ok - as to taking knives etc through - you shoulden't have a problem - I have taken 3-4 diving knives on a plane to canada in an ammo box as hand lugg. - but that was before sep 11. I've never had a problem with anything, but then again I havent traveled with anything juggling specific.
Busking - well that seems ok here in southampton and in colchester and around there - i haven't tried a major city yet.
Festivals - why glastonbury of course, the bjc, winchester hat fair, there's a couple in london, edinborough, glasgow, bristol. thats about all I can think of atm. but of those the hat fair and those in london are the most street related.

Hi Mike! Good to hear from you - my girlfriend was really pleased with winnie-the-pooh but unfortunately he had been rapidly losing weight and generally just looking old and wrinkled these past few months so I had to put him out of his misery (with a bottle-opener). Hope all is well with you and yeah, it would be great to bump into your not inconsiderable bulk (I do hope you've stopped wearing those skirts) somewhere out there in the old world.
              Take care, spike.

                  Hi Spike!

I believe we have met, i did an escapeshow at Edinburgh, last 2.5 weeks of the festival.
Well, Covent Garden is a pich that I have worked for about 4.5 years, you have to deal with management and an audition is supposed to happen too, but if another performer brings you to the office and can vouch for you and say that you can pull off a show thats cool too, people like Great Dave or Ben or Adrian Love or Peppe can do that kind of thing. The draw is at 8.15 in the morning, you have to get there at least a few minutes before that, definitely no later than 8.15 though, first out of the hat gets first pick. You also need public liability, but I am sure you are fammiliar with that.
Other Festivals to check out would be: Linz, Villach, Feldkirch, Bruck-an-der-Mur - All in Austria, one after another. The linz one is the first, Search for " Pflasterspektakel' . There is also the festivals.com and i am sure you would be able to find out more from festival page of performers.net
In london you can work Leicester Sq, its ruogher, but works for some and there is no booking, just turn up and que.
                  Well good luck.

                    Hi Julia!
Thanks for all that very useful info and yes I did have the pleasure of meeting you in Edinburgh - in fact I even let you borrow a fire-eating stick for a few days. Hopefully see you around, perhaps even at one of the festivals that you recommended.
                    Take care Julia,
                    spike.

                      Hey Spike

Julz - the man with the mustard suit here.
I finally found you...email on your card didnt work for me but I can't spell!!!

I went to covent after edinbourgh and found it hard but the english would probably love to see a scotsmen in a kilt attempting to maim himself!!!!

I worked next to the london eye which was more relaxed with far fewer performers. There is 2 pitches both are good if the weather is OK. The only problem - no fire, no knives! maybe you could swallow the cucumber!!!!!

Im back in Sydney which makes Edinbourgh seem like a dream utopia for buskers!!! but it's a job.

                      see ya
