Currently, the first post in a thread is on the last page, at the bottom...

Is there are way to reverse this?

Sorry, It's not possible for users to change this setting in the current version of the forum system.

I have the ability to change it sitewide, but this has been brought up a few times and after a bunch of polling, I decided to leave it like it is. It's been this way since 1997.
