annominity vs. unaccountability

    Jim & everyone,

Every now & then I notice a post that goes up by someone trying to hide their identity. More than the usual stagename or screen-name, that is.

Someone will create an account with a fake name & all that, put up one post -- usually derogetory -- and then that's that.

What is your take on this?

Despite the stage names or screen names, everyone knows who we are. I think that we should be accountable for what we say. Were this something of an extreme nature -- such as a child witness in a molestation case, than annominity would be understandable.

This is P-net, however, and it's mostly street performer bitching and gossiping.

My point is, that if someone is going to bitch, or someone is going to gossip, they shouldn't be a weasel about it.

Should these sneaky one-shot posts be deleted by Jim? I ask the community...

I definately agree with you le pire, I have no patience for them scoundrels!

I know with some forums the owner can get the IP address of the members, so perhaps when one of these posts springs up Jim could match the IP of the offender with that of a normal member to find out who the wascally wabbit is.

Or, even better, let's just all live peacefully in a meadow full of daisies, and join hands and sing Lennon, Dylan and Donovan songs.

I will not delete posts unless they are of a truly slanderous nature AND only on occasions when the slanderee has asked me to remove them.

In fact, I have only administratively removed one or two posts since this forum system went online in December 2000. (Other people have been spoken to and edited their posts on their own.)

As for people who log on under an assumed name to post trash... well... you're basically a pussy and if I catch you I'll delete your posts and ban you from the boards.

For people who post trash under their OWN name... I won't stop you (unless you're slandering someone else) but I ask you to consider the bandwidth you're wasting and that the money that pays for that bandwidth comes out of MY pocket.

      Hugs,

      Jim

P.S. Slanderous, anonymous posting was rampant on the OLD bulletin board system (1996-2000.) This system, which requires an actual email address and registration, has virtually eliminated those problems.

Let me chime in with my pet peeve, which are the people who register, which requires giving a valid email address, only to log in and remove their email address the first chance they get. Not only does this prove they don't want to participate -- only log on and take what they can get -- but how in the world do they expect any booking agents to reach them?

A pet peeve of mine are the "lurkers."

They log on, go to the "gigs" section and generally speaking nothing else.

It's kind of like someone who shows up at a party, goes straight to the refreshment table and then leaves without even so much as a "hello." Kind of rude, if you ask me.

Get over it mate. You can't put stuff in the public domain, and then expect to control how people use or abuse it.

Thanks Gerry, for once again chiming in with nothing useful. Wanker. For the uninitiated, Gerry Nelson is the guy from the Japan thread that told me to basically go to hell for asking about Japan (where he lives), but then had the gall to come back a month later begging for information about Europe (where I live). To date, he has not given these boards even one good piece of help. In other words, he is one of the lurkers we have been discussing. Did I say he was a wanker yet?

                Gerry,

It's not about "control." It's about courtesy.

Speaking of which, you could use a little yourself, mate.

Ok... Ok... Ok... Let me tell you what I hate...

I hate when people troll for flames. And then people who are susceptible to flames overreact and begin name calling and cause flames to grow up and be big 'ol fires.

                  Jeez!

Gerry was right in his point, however, he didn't say it too gracefully.

Gerry: You could have made your point in a more friendly way.
                  Etienne and Chance: relax.
You can't put stuff in the public domain, and then expect to control how people use or abuse it.

I believe he was referring to the site as a whole. And he's right. I don't expect to control how people use it. I will step in if people abuse it, but I know and accept the fact that many people lurk here for the gigs. So what? The gigs are posted to the entire WORLD to see. They're on the web. May the best act get the gig.

                  Aren't public forums great!

                  Jim

                      Gerry:
I was trying to be impartial, but then you chime in trying to get a reaction from Chance? Feel free to do it offline or on your own web space. I know it's not as fun that way, but that's my point. Please don't waste our time.

Dammit Jim! Dammit I say!! I just went out and bought a nice new handbag to swat mr nelson with, and you go and make me feel all guilty and stuff. I wonder now if they'll take it back. I think I tossed out the receipt...

                          Do you have matching shoes?
... then I'd be very interested.

Ahem, Robert, wrong mr nelson. I meant gerry nelson. But now that you mention it, maybe I should keep the handbag and go after the shoes too...
