    message icons

    hey jim,
maybe you could make a radio button for "other" on the icon list. The icons with the various faces and hands and stuff aren't as applicable as they could be. I could design new ones for you if you'd like or you could have it so that people could enter their own urls of images.

When you were telling me about what the site could be I hadn't such a grand picture in my mind.

    Scot,

I'm already working on some custom icons. I need to figure out how to get them into the system. Give me some time. I hate most of the included ones too. (They came with the system)

Loni Anderson is spelled this way, I think.

Well, I guess this a different Lonnie then.

I was thinking of icons like a juggling club, a guitar, a mime face, a circus tent, and american, australian, british flags. I can help you make some also if you want. Maybe other people have good ideas of things that apply too.

      Not the Loni Anderson,

        Scot,

A really easy way to change the icons is to grab the ones you think need changing (I think we really only need 1 smiley guy.) and then make new icons that are the same basic size. ANd then you can name them the same thing. And then I can just reload them on the server. When the page looks for the icons, it will grab the NEW ones instead.

Actually that's really simple. So yeah, go ahead and make 4 or 5 new icons (The same dimensions as the existing ones!) and then just email them to me. mailto:jim@smirk.comjim@smirk.com</A> And I'll replace them on the server.

Duh, why didn't I think of that before? I won't add new ones to the choices, we'll just replace the existing ones.

        Go for it.
        Jim

P.S. Who is Lonnie Anderson? Loni Anderson is the blonde from "WKRP in Cincinati" and Burt Reynolds.

            Jim,
The problem is that the icons that I am thinking of would be very topic specific and replacing the images in this way would replace the icons for the messages that are already posted. This could lead to confusion.

Scot, I'll figure out the best solution when it gets to that point. I may have to do some code tweaking. Just make sure the icons are the same size as what already exists.

I'd love to see what you com up with.

                Scot,

THANKS! Great job on the new icons, I loaded them in no problem. THe system will simply detect any icons as long as they're named in consecutive order and I put in one folder.

                We need more flags though...

There's room for three more. How about Canada, Australia, New Zealand?

                Jim

                    You got it, Dave!

Actually, you sent it in... Thanks!

I have a question for everyone, Do you think there are already too many message icons to choose from? Or should I add another row? Checkerhead sent in some more good ones and I've found a bunch myself. It just gets to be too much after a while. Let me know what you all think.

                    I'll take votes here.

                      Hey Jim,

Is there a way to change the message icon after you've selected one? I tried to go back to the message and edit it, but the message icon option doesn't reappear...

                      Just currious...

                      d.

Re: The Number of Icons... Three or four rows of icons is more than enough... I do sort of like the one I sent you of the dollar bill floating into the top hat though...

                          Dave,

You can't change the icon after you've submitted the message. Sorry. Choose wisely.

I wanted to add the Hat icon you sent and I actually have a couple others, but it would start a new row and be a bit much.

I can't replace an existing icon, because then it would change all those icons on the rest of the site that have already been used. (For example, If I put the Hat in place of the exclamation point, all the exclamation points already in use would then change to Hats when the pages are viewed again.)

If people want, I'll add another row of choices. Let me know.

                          Jim

                            Hey Folks,

I added a few more icons and sharpened up a few of the old ones. Sorry about forgetting Australia yesterday, Dom.

I have a new favorite icon.... Butt, I'll save it for special occasions.

                            Jim

P.S. Thanks to Scot Nery for the club, the guitar, the US and UK flags and the White Guy. Thanks to Checkerhead for the NZ, AUS, CDN and Japan flags, the jester, and the hat!
