    Cigars

    Hi all,
I'm currently playing a Groucho Marx type charicter in a production of "The Memorandum" at a local theatre. Any ways, he's always playing around with his cigar and I was wondering if theres any one here who smokes cigars and know wether you are suppost to take the little paper ring off first or not.
    Thanks alot,
    Mickey

    The ring debate.

This is an eternal debate between serious cigar smokers: Do you leave the ring on, or take it off?

It's really a prestige thing. If you leave the ring on, other aficianados can immediatly see what expensive brand you smoke. It's like wearing a Rolex or driving a Jag. I've got money, I've got style, I've got a big fat Cohiba and you don't.

If you're playing the cigar icon Groucho, you should research old photos or films of him, and you'll be able to see if liked the ring on or off.

      Hey,
Thanks alot. Thats some good info. The character I'm plaing I have just decided to base off Groucho Marx (who doe not leave the ring on) but my charicter is also scripted as a show off so I think I will leave the ring on!
      Thanks Again,
      Mickey

        Ring on . . . ring off

Make a gag out of it and put your own ring on the cigar. Maybe a frilly ring, or a brass ring, or a . . . well, anyway , use your imagination ring!

          Thats an idea!=)
I'm not sure if it would fit the charicter or the play though. The play is broken into three parts and I was thinking each time to have a shorter cigar (Like I had been smoking it) till at the end of the play its just a little tiny stump I'm smoking.

            La Gloria Cubana

Are you really smoking a real cigar during the play - or just an unlit stogie?

My favorite are La Glorias, made in Florida. A La Gloria Wavell is usually about $5 at a good tobacco shop, but the Torpedos and Coronas are more expensive and last longer. I have about one a month, and it's better than wearing a Rolex.

              No,
It won't be lit. They are going to have been burnt on the ends so it looks like its lit but I won't actualy be smoking it. I'm 17 so I don't smoke but even if I did I would have to smoke this thing for 3 hours a night, every night for two weeks. Sorry.

Shorter each time? Na, go the other way. Make it longer each time, and conclude with a toy baseball bat wrapped in athletic tape stained with tea. From a distance that should look about right!

                Or not.

Or produce the regular size cigar from your huge cigar carrying case. From inside a baseball bat or violin case, hot water bottle, thermus bottle or other improbable storage container. From inside a hot water bottle because you like to keep them warm.

If you want to be gross about it, from a doll's diaper.

Dispose of the ashes like my cousin did and tip them into your shirt pocket. Having your shirt pocket full of firecrackers - like my cousin had- is optional but exciting!

I like the idea of despsing of the ashes in my shirt pocket. Mabee one of the other charicters shirt pockets =). What about pulling a lit cigar out of my jacket? Thanks for the ideas Strech.
