First of all, ditch the white shorts. Save yourself, kid, I'm looking out for you here.
If, against all sound judgement, you simply must have these shorts to wear again, then you didn't hear this from me, but if, say, you wanted to donate them, clean, to the poor of the parish, I've got your cure.
Bring the shorts in an tattered bag to a foggy bog in medium moonlight. Remove whatever bottoms you are wearing, place them in the bag, and put some goggles on. Under no circumstances should you whistle, at any time in the procedure.
Raise the bag slowly over your head, and undulate beneath it while crying out "By sand and stone by brawn and brain by flame and drop let fly this stain! By rock and tree by hand and foot by air and earth remove this soot!"
Within three seconds, the soot will have transferred to the other bottoms. -
