    Director issues?

Not sure where to ask this as many of the threads don't really seem applicable.

I am in the process of creating a one woman show. Full length theater piece using physical theater. I have done all my own directing for my work up to this point, but I think I am going to need more than a generic outside eye helping me. I am thinking of enlisting the assistance of a director.

Question is, what is accpetable/normal compensation to offer for this service? I am looking to put the piece on in a small black box near my area and charge for tickets, so there is some income, but more that will be going out and, unless I can sell the piece to other locations based on video from the show, I don't know how much future income it can bring. I don't want to lose money on the venture, but I can't expect someone's quality help and insight if I don't offer something worthwhile as compensation.

    Thoughts?

You will need to ask someone who does this work; or maybe others have some experience with doing videos.
    Two questions come to mind.
    1) how much of this persons time will be required? You may need to shoot for more than one night? (maybe)
    2) How far might they need to travel to do this work?

I could ask my sister the videographer what the fees are like in this area (Boston, MA)? break a leg! - Kevin M.

Its not for video. Its for assisance in directing the stage work. Trying to help guide me since I can't be in the show and watching it. I ususally tape my shows to watch and fix things, but this is too big a project for that.

Up in the Boston area there are several artist's collectives and you can usually find someone to direct for little or no money.

I suggest you put a couple of ads on industry message boards, papers, and don't forget the Actor's Center in DC, and mentioning that there is little or no pay. There are just as many budding directors out there as there are actors who may be willing to build up their resume.

To go back to your original question-- you have to set the fee at what you can afford, as high or low as that is. At this point in the play's life, it is going to be a bit of an investment on the part of whoever joins up. If they are willing to take that risk, then enjoy the ride. What's most important is the play and how it develops.

          Hey Michele,

I actually need a show at my new club in Arlington - so this could be mutually beneficial. Hopefully I sent you a PM correctly.

          Track me down?

Since this is your first director, get a free one. If you don't listen to what they say, they'll quit. That will be good for keeping your ego low. Plus, no matter how much you pay, you'll feel like you're getting ripped off.
