    microphone type

    Hello fellow performers,
Last year I got my first bookings for some street theatre festivals and got back into street performing.
My show is a combination of talking and (technical) juggling. Now I got myself a new Taxi Crate some months ago, but now I need to get myself a wireless microphone set as well. I have paid attention to what the performers use at the Rotterdam Street Festival and some festival were I have played.
But the difference between most shows and my show is that I do a lot of technical juggling with ass catches and (double) pirouettes. These pirouettes goes really fast, sometimes even my swet gets torpedeted of my head due to the centrifucial force.
Now I am scared that if I buy a normal headset it will fly of my head. What do you think?
Would it be ok to me if I get myself a (regular) headset of is it better to get myself (I dont know how this type of mic in Enlgish is called) a mic really small which you positioned be clip of nail at your shirt. (muffler speld microphone??)
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Headset mics stay on well. Britney wears one while she dances.

Thanks, I have read the articles but they are nearly all about amplifiers and not really about mics.
Does they all stay at your head? Or does some brands fly off?

        ey scot,
recently i have worked with sennheiser headset and samson airline.
these two doesnt stick well on my head while pirouetting. Dancing and jumping is fine, but pirouetting with the speed jason garfield does, is a little risky. It stays on your head, but after every pirouette you have to put you mic back into place.
        A double pirouette is hell.
        Just to let you know,
        niels

          hi niels,
duct tape it to your head, perhaps...it might be, however, that you can work as effectively with a lavalier (clip-on) mic. just make sure your input level (gain) is high and you can be heard in most situations with one of these. i never thought about how much force is present when you pirouette sooooo fast. good luck.

            Hello Barry,
Nice to hear from you! Hope you are doing well.
I have bought a samson airline aerobic headset about a month ago, it is a very good mic. But I have to relax a bit with my pirouettes, I love pirouettes while I juggle, but for now I keep them out of my street/talk show. (I managed to do a pirouette under all 7 balls when I was doing 7 in practice, so cool!!)
In may I had bought a cheap K&K lavelier mic, which worked fine, but a kid ruinated it at the Ovezande Street Theatre Festival. So the week there after I bought a Samson mic.
I am thinking getting a lavelier samson mic as well. That I have two different mics, and that will work on the same reciever, that I can chose which one I am going to use, when I pack my bag for the show. If you have another stupid kid in the same week as when you have more shows to do, you will have a BIG problem.
            Cheers, Niels

I use a wireless headset which was made for fitness coaches. You have to buy a recieve and headset seperatly I think to get a fitness style headset. I have never had a problem with this headset falling off. I think the kind of mic you clip to your shirt is called a lavalare. Don't use one for street shows. They are really bad when it is windy!

                Hi Niels,

I do know of a microphone which I practically guarantee will stay on no matter what you do. I have been using one myself and although I don't do any pirhouettes (did I spell that right???) the mic feels as though it would stay on through anything. Mason does a side somersault and his stays on perfectly. The only thing is, it is a home made adaption so can be a bit tricky to make.

Heres what you do.... Take a lavalier/lapel mic of any description (but preferably one which doesn't get too affected by wind - mine is sennheiser and has the sponge protection). Take a peice of thick, stiff wire (you can use a wire coathanger). Bend the wire around one ear and down a bit, around the back of your head so it sits across just where your head joins your neck, then up over your other ear and down your cheek to where you want mic to sit.

Play with it until you get a snug fit and can move your head in all directions without disrupting the postion of the mic. It should press slightly just in front of your ears, and that's what holds it on.

Next, take the mic and put it on the end of the wire where you want it to sit and tape it to the wire. You wrap tape around the wire and the mic cable until it reaches the point that sits at the back of your head. Continue taping the wire but drop the cable out so that it falls down the back of your neck. You can use either black tape or skin coloured strapping tape depending on your preference. It is fiddly to do and the tape probably needs to be replaced when it gets dirty, but you end up with a custom fitted headset mic. I don't know if I've explained very well, but I would be happy to show you mine when I see you this year!

                Friendly regards,
                Toni (Minnie Maniac), NZ

ask jason garfield what he uses. I'm pretty sure he uses a lavalear mic. if you put a wind guard on the mic there won't be much more of a wind problem then you would have with a headset. the wind guard is the little foam thing that goes over the element, and they are on most of the fitness instuctor mics. I'm sure you know that, but someone here probably doesn't.
sennheiser also makes a couple other higher end headset mics as well. they are very thin and virtually invisible and cost about as much as the whole aerobic instuctor system you have (i have the same one). I have no idea if they would work better for you or not, but it's somthing to look into. I want one just because they look better.

Hey, Thanks all for their advice.
The samson now works really well, because I dropped all the pirs out of my show. What is a shame, I would love to bring them back in. I was thinking of getting a lavellier set too, next to my headset. That I can choose at the beginning what set I am going to use, depending of the wind.
And that I have an extra set, if one quits workings.
                    Thanks, Niels

lav mic for Apollo Waistband amp?

I'm using a 5 watt belt mounted amp by Apollo for my strolling act. #PA-5007. I want to get rid of the headset mic. Any suggestions as to a particular model of lav mic to use with this?
