Sticks for plate spinning

A friend of mine runs a science center in VA and they have a floor exhibit where kids can spin plates. The wooden dowels keep breaking. Does anyone know of a source for an affordable alternative that will be more sturdy? Graphite? Fiberglass? Plastic?
