can anyone recommend software to RECORD and EDIT music on a PC? I will be plugging in a microphone.

I need to be able to do mixing of tracks and all that. Thanks,

You can try Audacity. May not yet have all of the bells and whistles of the comercial apps, but it is open source (free), and has a decent developers community supporting it.
