Majiloon Virtual Soundman 7

After 4 months of waiting, This bloody thing finally arrived. I left my MD player in the car over the weekend-- just my luck, it somehow got water damaged!!

I need to get a new MD player.

I can't get a straight answer from Kelly (the guy who makes the VSM7) -- so does anyone know which MD player will work best with this thing? Thanks!

Etienne,

I am using a Sony Net MD, MZ-N505, type-R. I dont know if its the best, but it works very well. I have had no problems at all. I belive I even seen one at Wall-Mart.

Hope this helps,
Tom B

Just got some advice from a friend who works at the sony store - thought I'd share. He said that your MD and CD players should be operated at room temperature. If they're frozen and operated cold then any water, ice, or water vapour that might be in the unit tends to crack important parts inside the players.

I also find that it's good to get the extended warranty with these things, as we tend to be pretty rough with them. Sony is also in court with somebody over manufacturing products to last a year and then break, so if you're going with SONY products 2 year warranties might be a great idea.

I got really exited over the recent article in Genii about this product. But now I'm wondering...why is it so expensive? Isn't it basically a remote control? What does this product do for you that a remote won't do?

Hey Zack,

The VSM rules. I got mine a little less than a year ago and it's been a great addition to the show. Now I know he came out with a new model recently which has a lot of addition features that you can add on for a fee. The one I have (last years model VSM6?), can skip forward, skip backward, fast forward, fast backward, pause play, volume up, volume down, and fade down. It works on an FM frequency and I've operated it from at least 200 feet away. All from a little remote hooked on my belt that's smaller than a pager.

The new one, VSM7, has new features like and ankle strap to start and stop the music, an led display to see what track you are on, vocal interupt (brings down the level of the music if you talk) and other features as well.

There is only one other system I know of the Showtech and Minitech, which are much more expensive, granted I think you can program them for different shows and run lights and fog machines with them too. But
I hear they aren't nearly as easy to use and very well might be overkill depending on what you need.

One great thing I found I really liked besides just cueing my music during the show was being able to stop my pre-show music when someone is about to introduce me. And I can do this from a different room!

Hope this helps!

Josh

I am now working the virtual soundman7 (vsm7) into my show and it is indispensible. I can't tell you how badly my music has been screwed up in the past by sound techs, and my sound is ULTRA simple.

I did find the vsm7 to be pricey, but really don't have much of a choice as there is not too much competition out there. The showtech is a better machine, but more $$$.

My biggest complaint about the soundman is he instructional video that came with it is probably the worst I have ever seen of its genre.

Basically, Kelly, the guy who makes the VM7 is standing behind his camcorder while reaching in front of the lense to press buttons on his MD player & the VM7. You never see more than his hands the entire time. He rambles on, sometimes incoherently, and you can tell that he's making it up as he goes along.

He mentions at the beginning of the tape that the production values are low. This is incorrect-- they simply do not exist. The tape does its job, yes, but when I just dropped a grand for a MD remote control I do expect a little more effort to be put into the instructional tape than this.

I was also VERY dissapointed that the VSM7 was shipped to me more than a month after its' promised delivery date. I had reserved studio space (with a considerable deposit) to rehearse my show with the VSM7 and wanted to incorporate it into all of my December shows. This did not happen, so not only did I lose my deposit (because rehearsals would have been pointless), but I wasn't able to give my show the added boost I wanted to.

If I show up late for a performance, I'm screwed. Majiloon failed to deliver on time, yet there are no consequences to him... Me no like.
