Dura-Stilt Advice

A friend recently gave me a pair of second hand dura-stilts (thanks Liz!), along with replacement pads, straps, and springs. The old leg pads on the brace that sits below your knee (sorry, I am completely ignorant of the part names) are glued on, but the new pads don't have adhesive backing. Is there any specific glue I should use to attach them? Should I stick them onto the old pads, or remove the old one's first?

Also, what are the opinions on removing the springs; I've heard some people find it easier without them.

I would recomend replacing the curved plate that the pads stick to. I have replaced it with halves of 5" aluminum architectural pipe. The original piece tends to bend. While not realy all that dangerous, you could still be hurt and it is very uncomfortable. Also, you can get 2 halves of this pipe, about 4 inches long, for under $1. It lets you start out with a smooth, clean and much stronger piece than the original. I would also say it is worth the $1 just so you don't end up scraping the old pad off.
