Tom, I'm curious. Since this whole thing began, have you ever, just once, wondered if maybe the guy had a point? That maybe, just maybe your pic really did play into the very cliche he was poking fun at?

Okay, at the risk of defending Tom's photos, I'm gonna say that it's not fair to beat up on them here. He didn't ask for critique on his promo.

I challenged him on his statements that the blog is in copy write violation and gave coherent discussion points on why I don't believe it is. Photo copy write issues are something I have a real interest in and pay attention to, so I wanted to flesh the topic out a little. He really hasn't defended his position for the sake of the discussion with anything meaningful, or addressed the points I brought up; but that doesn't necessarily open him up to extra ridicule on his photos or his willingness to stand behind them.

I'm in a foul mood today, my mortgage guy f'd up my closing date and now I'm gonna have to reschedule a flight on monday so I can close on this condo. If I can hold my tung and be nice, so can you.

Evan, are you talking to me? Since I'm the only post after yours I can only assume so. If that's the case, are you seriously saying that my post was too hash and needed to be toned down? I'll give you some time to think about it while I go dust off my double-barrel...

Ha! well, when you put it that way, f this Tom guy!

I don't want to scold anyone, I'm just looking to keep salt out of wounds among "friends". I know that I get pretty sensitive when I get bad reviews; even if it's just one negative comment in an overall positive review I get upset and sensitive. Lets all hold hands now and sing. ya know?

I wasn't critiqueing Tom's photo. Neither was Chance. We were critiquing his attitude, because his attitude is pointless and self defeating.

I know, (I guess, kinda looks to me like your bashing his promo as well), I just know that Tom's actually a decent guy, and that running people over doesn't bring out the best sometimes.

Just trying to stick up for ALL my friends out there.

I never once said anything about the photo. If I were to say something, it wouldn't be nice. It doesn't matter, and you know that, Evan. Good guy or not has nothing to do witht he quality of your promo. The fact that some people book you also does not prove that your promo is good. Not being able to correctly recognize a criticism, even when it's unwarranted, is not only childish, but, in the long run, just winds up hurting you more. Why get your feelings hurt, when you could jsut laugh it off, and try to make things better?

                    Bad Bad Magic Photos

                    Hi,

I originally posted the link for BMP. Just so you know, I don't endorse the site. I mean, there are some photos that do need some help, but the guy gets carried away with his time on the soapbox. He gets unnecessarily cruel and rude.

Tom, you may want to go back to the site. Your name is on a list of "People who couldn't take being on this site". He calls it the "Wuss list" and clicking on your name takes people to your website.

That is just mean-spirited. Not helpful.

                    Steve

                      Great Performer Photos

So I got caught up in the brouhaha surrounding this site as well. So I decided to create an alternative.

Now, I don't know nuttin' bout no pitchers, just know what I likes.

So I need your help: If you have great pictures, or someone who has great pictures, send them on to me WITH PERMISSION TO USE THEM and we can start objectively looking at why they are great.

Do you know something about photography? Comment on the photos. Send me links to good articles and blogs, like epic edits which I already found.

And, most of all, IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE ENTERTAINING, WITTY AND FUNNY WITHOUT BEING CRASS AND DESTRUCTIVE? That's an honest question. I know my own sense of humor tends toward the crass and destructive. Too much South Park, maybe, I don't know. But the reason the badmagicphotos blog works and is popular is because it is funny.

Best wishes, gang, and who knows, it may become another great resource. Or not.

                      Kindly,

                      Brian

Just because you find something funny doesn't mean it is appropriate.

I remember my son, when he was only a few years old, playing with the green beans off of his dinner plate when we were at a nice restaurant. He was asked to stop, but continued anyway. When I had to get a little tough on him about it, I asked why he didn't listen and kept on going with his bean-play. His reply was simply "because it is funny!"

He was right of course - it was very funny, and very cute. But, that didn't change the fact that I had to try to explain that just because it is funny, it isn't appropriate for that time and place.

On the other hand, since I'm 47 years and we're no relation I think I'll just keep doing as I please, thank you very much!

I can not believe for the life of me that a group of professional buskers have to waste time splitting hairs on what funny is. Or even humor for that matter. We of all people can give entire courses of the subject, and I think a few of us have. Maybe even you, Steven.

Humor is subjective and entirely conditional. There is no acceptable pattern, no universal template, or else it would cease to exist. (If I see your punchline 20 seconds out I'm not going to laugh very much, am I?)

So a guy's making fun of us magicians? So what? Since when do we care what others think? And if he truly offends anyone here, then I suggest you grow a pair. And if growing a pair is too much like work then I suggest you just ignore the guy. The quickest way to put out a fire is to deprive it of oxygen.

Agreed. And in the big scope of things, rarely does anything of consequence come from the sort of negative exposure as that particular blog is promoting. If you're rational about it, and "grow a pair", that sort of thing shouldn't be so hurtful. All of us should probably be better at laughing at ourselves, but the trouble is, being butt hurt sucks in an irrational way.

Yes. Just find the right audience for your material and it ceases to be crass and destructive.

Spot on. I'd nominate this as quote of the month, if we had one.
