    Copyrights on YouTube

I made a promo for a friend and put it on youtube a couple years ago. They just alerted me that it has been muted because it contains copyrighted music. This is gonna happen a lot.

Yeah it will happen a lot.

Take a look at the youtube TOS it explains what happens when you use copyrighted material.

    What can you do?
Find some royalty free music (there are heaps of websites out there)

or find music from different publishing houses. they are cracking down on music put out by warner bros because they don't want to give warner as much money as they are asking for.
if you put up a clip with music in it, the company that publishes that music gets a portion of the add revenue associated with the viewing of that page. Warner was asking for too much in the new contract negotiations.

and warner is an umbrella company for a lot of smaller music houses, so any of the company's in that umbrella will be affected by this.

If you are using copyright music from anyone, any source, any company etc... that you do not have the rights to, it can happen to any at anytime. This includes not just your promo videos but also performance.

        the only solutions are:

1.) obtain the rights to use that music

2.) write your own music or have someone write music for you

        3.) use royalty free music

The upside to this in regards to performance is that rarely is the performer needed to get performance rights to the music, this is usually the responsibility of the venue you are performing at.
