    website update - new video

Updated my website to feature video clips of me busking, and released a new music video with clips of me street performing in Myrtle Beach. Enjoy!

Much better than your others but who exactly is doing your video for the internet? Look closely and you'll see it isn't clear and smooth...probably because it needs more info to display...a great help site is www.videohelp.com

PS - I like that shot of you in the box that makes your head disappear.

I did all the videos there ... they arn't meant to be DVD or even VCD quality, rather internet quality. They are streamed at the same kpbs rates as online news organizations use to stream their broadcasts so I don't really understand what the problem is there? Videohelp.com is a site for burning video to DVD's and SVCD's, not streaming video over the internet.

To improve quality means to burn more bandwidth, streaming DVD quality video would be costly - I am not aware of anyone that actually streams that type of quality for free. I generally compress at 150kbps, which is considered DSL quality ... a few get compressed at 340kbps which is considered cable quality.

Bigger issues are the actual raw footage, it is hard to get good lighting in a dark pitch when filming at night ... when filming live street performances, you take what video you get and do what you can with it. I don't have the advantage of controlled lighting in a studio format.

In addition to capturing the moment, I'm also fighting the backlighting from the stores, the occassional car headlights driving by, people standing in front of the camera, wind blowing in the mic (I'm 2 blocks from the ocean breeze), trying to stay in focus and in frame, and a whole host of other factors that provide a constant headache. I can't just say "cut - we need to reshoot that". I can't say "this backdrop is all wrong, change the flats pronto".

I myself am quite happy with the results. I have over 30 megabytes of video online for free ... I'm not aware of any other performers offering that much footage online.

hey...if you're happy with it, go for it. I'm just saying not enuf information is included which is why it's choppy and blurry.

Actually, I agree with videohelp.com...Although I've broken this general rule with 400 and 500kbps online clips, anything less than 750 is really crap.

30mb of this is a scarey thought...

At 750kbps I would be serving over 150 megs of video. People wouldn't download as much ... dialup users would probroly not even bother to check out a small clip. Not to mention the bandwidth bill would go up 5x. But the biggest problem is connection issues, such as the ones buskercentral.com suffers.

I have havn't been able to access your site in some time - I actually thought it had been taken down. I asked my girlfriend to check the page, and it wouldn't display on her connection either; this could be a DNS error, but most likely your videos are just too large - if a couple of people are downloading they use the entire pipe and nobody else can access the site. This results in "Page Cannot Be Displayed", broken images, incomplete downloads, and a host of other problems.

You should have your webhost put a thottle on downloads, so more people can download without using your entire pipe ... or reduce the size of your downloads which is the route most video servers take. Offering 20 megabyte downloads isn't a great idea unless you have a direct connection all to yourself - not a dedicated server, as a dedicated server still shares the same connection with all the other servers they host. You need your own T3 connection to host the kind of files it sounds like you are trying to host.

            ic...ic

I'd like the 750kbps myself but just too darn large. I suppose I could make low res and high res...another scarey thought...but in my case, I'm not going to bother.

Lots of people don't read the directions at BC and just click on the video when they need to right click and save target as.

They'll just have to keep trying since I've moved on to another project.

Regardless, I still like downloadable video as you can still surf somewhat then play it as many times as you wish.

In the near future when 80% people have high-speed internet, I can then put them back on at huge file sizes.

I agree your lighting is probably the culprit...

Most people perfer to stream video by clicking on it because then the file is saved in their temp internet files and the browser will automatically delete it, thus saving them from needing to manually clean up their harddrive.

More high speed internet access won't solve the problem, as while users can download at speeds of 750 kbps ... very webservers can upload that fast. A good server can hit speeds of 300 kbps, but a more realistic average is 150 kbps.

Well, thanks for the throttle info. I'll look into it on the next update.

Actually, stats say last Friday, users d/l'ed over 492mb so someone's getting them...

                I'd check your connect.

                good luck!
