I'm currently at http://www.interland.com but I'm moving to a new host right now. Interland was good and reliable, but they're too expensive these days. 5 years ago, they were a good deal, but there are far better deals out there now.

I've personally set up at least 6 people at http://www.addr.com and have not heard any problems with those sites. They give you 100 megs for about (US)$15/mo.

My only advice is to stay away from Free hosts that put banner ads on your site (TOTALLY unprofessional for a performer.)

My site's hosted by GoDaddy.com. They charge $3.95/month for their most basic ("Junior") service, which includes 25MB of disk space, 1GB of monthly data transfer, and email account, and some other stuff. You can go up to 150MB of space and increase the other stuff for anywhere from $7.95 to $9.95/mo.

So far I'm very happy with them and have had no problems.

I also bought my domain name from them for $8.95/yr.

Netfirms is a pretty good one. 500 MB for 9.95 per month, two websites I host there have had no problems for the past year. I am switching my performing site to them once my account expires on my current server.

I use Fatcow.com. $99 per yer ($8.25 per month)= 500 megs disk space, 25 gigs transfer, 100 email accounts, webstats, GREAT customer service, etc. I use godaddy to register various domain names (I own veryfunny.com, .org, .biz, . cc, .us, .ws, etc). Fatcow has been great, they beat every one else I've seen and if you do decide to use them, please tell them you heard about them form me, cause I get a free month of service. I wouldn't recommend them, however, just for my own selfish gains. If they were crap I would tell you so and switch to a better provider myself.

I use monsterhosting.ca I've been very happy with them so far. They'll register your domain name for free for the first year too. Below is a link to their package/price table.

I use Sheer Genius in Nashville.

It's owned by a juggler and they have features galore including php, mysql, real server, and a million things I don't use. Sometimes if you ask them, they'll set up another feature just for you. They also do design and programming.

They are constantly friendly and fun and subcontract out if necessary to solve any challenge a client might have (international video conference, video production, database driven flash, etc.)

You get all the benefits of a personal small business, the power of bigtime software and server knowledge and none of the guilt of supporting a big corporation -- you're supporting a hobbiest juggler and his family.

I use Laughing Squid www.laughingsquid.net for most of the same reasons that Scot uses sheer genius, plus laughing squid is real cheap, check out the starving artist discount

Yeah, I am seriously considering that one. I know someone else mentioned it before. would like some feedback from that person to see if they are happy with their service.

Also would someone care to explain what all those three letter words and other terms mean and do? I have no idea.

                    PHP 4

Do I need to know? Or can I just FTP my stuff up and let it go at that?

Godaddy helps register your domain name for a really good price. Good choice!

Who actually originated this nutty idea of having to pay to register a domain name, why didn't folks complain, and who actually receives the money?
